Taxi in Kataragama, private transfers at a fixed price

Cars stop at the car park on the town side of the Menik Ganga bridge, because the precinct beyond is closed to traffic; your driver waits there while you cross on foot and walk the sand avenue up to the shrine. Ninety minutes covers the evening puja without hurrying, longer on a poya day when the queue of fruit trays doubles and the whole place smells of camphor. We collect at the door of any guesthouse or pilgrim rest in Kataragama, at the hotels around Tissamaharama and Debarawewa, at Kirinda on the coast, and at the Yala ticket office at Palatupana when a morning safari runs long. A four-in-the-morning departure for the dawn puja is routine here, not a favour: tell us the night before and the car is at the door.

Kataragama is where the coast gives up. The road comes down through Hambantota to Tissamaharama, turns inland for the last twenty kilometres and stops at the sacred precinct; east of that there is only Yala and jungle, which is why Pada Yatra pilgrims still walk in on foot from the east coast. Tissamaharama lies twenty kilometres and roughly half an hour south-west, and that is where most visitors sleep. The one road on climbs north through Buttala to Wellawaya and Ella, about ninety-five kilometres and two to two and a half hours, running along the inland edge of the park: wild elephants stand on that tarmac after dark, and drivers who know it do not hurry. The nearest railhead is Beliatta, a hundred-odd kilometres back along the coast, where the line extended from Matara in 2019 currently ends.

The Esala festival fills two weeks of July or August and ends on the Esala full moon: nightly peraheras with elephants, kavadi dancers, penitents pierced with skewers, fire-walking in the small hours of the final night, and the water-cutting in the river at dawn. Some arrive on foot, having walked the Pada Yatra down the east coast from Jaffna through Kumana and Yala over about two months. Rooms in Tissamaharama go months ahead and every approach road crawls. Outside those weeks the town is dusty and ordinary, and the shrine is shut between pujas: turning up at two in the afternoon buys you nothing. This is the driest corner of the island: hot and clear from roughly February to September, with the rain arriving in October and November and the north-east monsoon behind it into January. White clothes, covered shoulders, shoes off at the gate; the sand is scalding at midday and kind by evening. No meat or alcohol is sold inside the sacred city, and cameras are not welcome at the inner shrine. Offering trays are bought at the stalls by the bridge, on site and separately from the transfer.

The evening puja, at about half past six, is the reason to be here: drummers lead the line of fruit trays up the avenue, the curtain opens, the casket is shown, sacred ash and a thread are handed out, and it is over inside the hour. Two more are held, roughly half past four in the morning and half past ten, and the doors stay shut in between. Kiri Vehera, a plain white stupa traditionally credited to a local king named Mahasena, stands a short walk north through the trees inside the same precinct. Pilgrims wash in the Menik Ganga before crossing and break coconuts on the stone by the gate, a clean split counting as the good answer. Sella Kataragama, four kilometres upstream, keeps a Ganesha shrine, deep shade and far fewer people. A small archaeological museum sits near the dagoba.
