We collect from the village centre, from the guesthouses along the Passara road, and from the properties scattered up the hillside towards Little Adam’s Peak and Demodara. Several of those access tracks are steep, unpaved and too narrow for a van, so tell us the property name when you book and we will send a vehicle that can actually reach it. Ella railway station is a common pickup for travellers arriving on the hill-country train and continuing by road.

You can walk the length of Ella in ten minutes. Everything else. Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak, Ravana Falls, the Demodara loop, is a short tuk-tuk ride or a longer walk, and tuk-tuks are plentiful. Where a car earns its keep is leaving: Ella is a genuine crossroads, with the coast four hours south, Yala two and a half hours south-east and Kandy four hours north, and none of those connections are quick by public transport.

Ella is cooler than the coast and warmer than Nuwara Eliya, which makes it the most comfortable base in the hills. It also rains here more than the photographs suggest, particularly from October to December. The single most useful planning tip: if you are heading to the airport, work backwards properly. Five and a half hours of driving plus three hours of check-in means leaving Ella in the afternoon for a flight after midnight, and it is the mistake we see most often.

Nine Arch Bridge is the photograph everyone comes for, and it is best at 06:30 before the crowds and the first train. Little Adam’s Peak is an easy 45-minute walk with a better view than its name suggests. Ella Rock is a real hike of three hours and needs an early start. Ravana Falls sits on the road below the village and takes twenty minutes. Most people stay two nights, which is about right, one is a rush and three is a lot of banana pancakes.
