Taxi in Ella: private transfers at fixed prices

Inside Ella, a tuk-tuk is the right tool. Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak, Ravana Falls and the Demodara loop are each a short ride, tuk-tuks wait along the main street, and a car adds nothing but a parking problem. Ride-hailing apps are a different story here: PickMe and Uber have very few drivers based in Ella, requests for long-distance trips are usually declined or cancelled, and the local taxi trade is protective of its village. For leaving Ella, whether to the coast, to Kandy or to the airport, a pre-booked transfer with one agreed price is what almost every traveller ends up using, and it is the only option that has a car at your guesthouse at 05:00.

The train deserves its own paragraph. Ella to Kandy by rail is about seven hours of the finest scenery in the country, through Haputale, Nanu Oya and the tea above Hatton, and if you have the day and light luggage it is the better way to travel that leg. Reserved seats sell out weeks ahead in season and the unreserved carriages are standing room only. The workaround many travellers use: ride the train yourselves and send the suitcases by car ($70€65CHF 57AED 260Rs 22,000₹6,600¥470₽5,800 (Rs 22,000) for the vehicle), so the driver is at Kandy station when you arrive. The train also runs the other way to Badulla, thirty minutes on, but there is no railway from Ella to the south coast, to Yala or to the airport; those are road journeys.

We collect from the village centre, from the guesthouses along the Passara road, and from the properties scattered up the hillside towards Little Adam’s Peak and Demodara. Several of those tracks are steep, unpaved and too narrow for a van: tell us the property name when you book and we send a vehicle that can actually reach it, or agree a meeting point at the bottom of the lane if nothing can. Ella railway station is a common pickup for travellers arriving on the hill-country train and continuing by road; give us the train number, and the driver waits for the real arrival, which on this line can be an hour behind the timetable. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup.

You can walk the length of Ella in ten minutes, and the village has almost nowhere to park. The A23 drops south through Wellawaya to the plains: Tissamaharama, the base for Yala, is 110 km and 2 h 30; Kataragama 90 km. The coast is further than it looks: Mirissa is 165 km and about 4 h via Wellawaya and the A2, Galle 175 km and 4 h 15. North, the A5 climbs through Bandarawela and Haputale (25 km, 50 min) to Nuwara Eliya, 55 km that take 1 h 45, and on to Kandy in 4 h. The airport is the long one: 250 km and about 5 h 30 by the southern expressway, longer after heavy rain. Arugam Bay on the east coast is and about through Monaragala.

Ella is cooler than the coast and warmer than Nuwara Eliya, which makes it the most comfortable base in the hills. It also rains here more than the photographs suggest, particularly from October to December, and the escarpment road slows down after a storm. The single most useful planning tip: if you are heading to the airport, work backwards properly. 5 h 30 of driving plus the three hours the airport asks for means leaving Ella around 16:00 for a flight at 01:30, and a 15% night surcharge applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, shown before you pay. Nine Arch Bridge is best at 06:30, before the crowds and the first train; Ella Rock needs an early start and three hours. Two nights is about right.

Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara is the photograph everyone comes for. Little Adam’s Peak is an easy 45-minute walk with a better view than its name suggests, Ella Rock a real hike of three hours, Ravana Falls a twenty-minute stop on the road below the village. Lipton’s Seat above Haputale, Diyaluma Falls towards Wellawaya and the Buduruwagala Buddhas are the half-day trips worth a car. Ella is in Uva Province, at the eastern edge of the central highlands, which is why it is both a hill station and the gateway to Yala and the south-east.
