Taxi from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, fixed price private transfer

The road leaves Kandy along the Peradeniya road, passes Gampola, then begins the sustained climb at Pussellawa. Ramboda Falls arrives at roughly the two-thirds point, and the tea estates of Labookellie follow shortly after. Driving time is two and a half hours clean; three and a half with a waterfall stop and a factory tour. The temperature drops noticeably. Kandy sits at 500 m and is warm, Nuwara Eliya at 1,900 m is genuinely cold in the evening, and a jumper you packed at the bottom of your case will be wanted at the top.

This is a good road in poor weather rather than a bad road. The surface is sound, the bends are well cambered, and it carries constant traffic, which keeps speeds sensible. The real variable is cloud. From late morning the mist rolls up the valley and by mid-afternoon the section above Ramboda is often entirely white, you will still get there, you simply will not see anything. Between June and September this can persist all day. There is one other detail: the roadside stalls above Pussellawa sell corn and strawberries and create informal parking chaos on Sundays, when Sri Lankan families drive up from Colombo. A Sunday afternoon transfer can lose thirty minutes to that alone.

Two and a half hours is short enough that vehicle choice matters less here than on the longer hill routes, but the same principle applies: on a road made of bends, suspension beats horsepower. The comfort sedan is the sensible default for two to four people, with a case each. For five or six with cases, the comfort van is the vehicle with room for the luggage, with one caveat specific to Nuwara Eliya: several of the older hotels have short, steep driveways where a long vehicle stops at the gate and you walk the last few metres. If anyone in the group is prone to motion sickness, the front seat of any vehicle beats the back seat of a better one.

The train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, is the celebrated hill-country line and takes about four hours. It is slower than the car, and Nanu Oya is still 9 km from town, so you need a tuk-tuk or taxi at the end. As an experience it beats the road; as transport it does not. Buses run frequently and cost very little, but the luggage racks are small and the road is winding enough that the back of a bus is an unpleasant place to be.

Morning, without hesitation. Leave Kandy between 08:00 and 09:30 and the climb is clear, the light on the tea is at its best and the factories are working. Afternoons are cloudier and Sundays are busier. Nuwara Eliya’s peak season is April, around the New Year, when the town fills with domestic visitors and hotel prices double, the drive is the same, but the last two kilometres into town take much longer. December to February is cold and clear, which is the best combination for this route.
