From central Colombo the route runs through the city to Peliyagoda, then north on the E03 Airport Expressway to Katunayake, about twenty-five minutes of expressway at any hour. Getting to the expressway is the variable: fifteen minutes from Fort at night, forty in the morning peak, and ten to fifteen more from Colombo 3, 4 or 7. Our planning figure is ninety minutes door to door for a daytime departure and sixty at night. For a 01:30 flight, a pickup around 20:50; for a 10:00 flight, a pickup at 05:00 rather than 06:00.

The corridor that decides this journey is Galle Road and the approaches to the Kelani bridge. Between 07:30 and 09:30, and again from 16:30 to 19:00, the crawl northwards out of the city is genuinely severe, and drivers heading from Colombo 3 or 4 will often cut inland via Havelock Road and Baseline Road rather than sit in it. On days with a state event, a procession or a protest around Galle Face or the port, the seafront can close at short notice and every alternative fills within minutes; that is a Colombo fact rather than an operator failure, and the only defence is leaving earlier. Hotel pickups in the Fort area are also slowed by the security checkpoints around the port entrance.

A short, smooth, mostly expressway run, so the choice is about boot space rather than ride quality. The economy sedan takes three cases and cabin bags; four people with four checked bags need the comfort sedan, and anything beyond that the van, and Sri Lankan sedan boots are smaller than most visitors expect. The return-specific point is the same everywhere but sharpest in Colombo, where people do their shopping: tea, spices and textiles take more room than anyone plans for. If you are leaving from a city hotel at the end of a trip, size up rather than gamble on it.

There is an airport bus from Colombo Fort and it is inexpensive, and there are ride-hailing apps which are cheaper than us for a single traveller with hand luggage. For a daytime departure with time in hand, an app is a perfectly sensible choice and we would say so. Where they fail is at three in the morning, which is when most long-haul flights leave: driver acceptance rates collapse at that hour, and a cancelled ride at 03:15 with a 06:00 check-in is not a situation with a good outcome. The difference you are buying is a car that is confirmed the day before.

Leave before 07:00 or after 10:00, and avoid the 16:30 to 19:00 window entirely if your flight allows it. Night departures between 22:00 and 05:00 get the fastest run of the day and attract a surcharge that is itemised before you pay. If you are connecting from a domestic flight or a train into Fort, allow ninety minutes rather than sixty, particularly on a weekday morning. Mid-April, during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, is the one week when even the expressway fills and an extra hour is not paranoia.
