At 1,900 m, Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka and the coldest place most visitors will experience on the island. The British built it as a hill station and the architecture still says so. It sits in the middle of the tea country, two and a half hours from Kandy and under two from Ella, which makes it a natural stop rather than a destination in its own right.

Where we pick up in Nuwara Eliya
We collect from hotels in town, from the older properties around the golf course and the lake, and from the estate bungalows scattered outside. Several hotel driveways here are short and steep, which is why we suggest an SUV over a long van for families arriving with luggage. Nanu Oya station is one of our most common pickups: it is the stop for Nuwara Eliya on the hill-country line, and the nine kilometres into town are not walkable with bags.
Getting to and from Nuwara Eliya
The town centre is small and walkable, and the lake and the racecourse are a few minutes from most hotels. Everything interesting is outside town: the tea estates, Horton Plains an hour away, and the Nanu Oya railway station nine kilometres down the hill. Tuk-tuks handle short distances but are genuinely cold at this altitude in the early morning, which is when you will be going to Horton Plains.
Travel tips for Nuwara Eliya
Bring warm clothes. Evening temperatures drop to around 10 °C and can go lower in January, and this is the one place in Sri Lanka where visitors are consistently caught out. April is peak domestic season around the New Year, when the town fills up and prices double. The road up from Kandy clouds over in the afternoon, so travel in the morning if you want to see the tea country you came for.
About Nuwara Eliya
Horton Plains and World’s End need a 06:00 start, the view closes in by nine almost every day, and arriving late means paying the entrance fee for a wall of cloud. Gregory Lake is the local promenade. The tea estates around Labookellie run factory visits Monday to Saturday. Victoria Park is worth an hour for birdwatchers in season. The town itself is more curious than beautiful, and one night is enough for most itineraries.
Frequently asked questions
How cold does it get?
Around 10 °C in the evening, occasionally lower in January. Warm clothing is genuinely necessary, which surprises most visitors arriving from the coast.
How long from Kandy?
Two and a half hours for 80 km on the A5. It is slow because the road is continuous bends, not because it is in poor condition.
When should we leave for Horton Plains?
By 06:00. World’s End clouds over by about nine on most days, and the walk takes three hours.
Can you collect us from Nanu Oya station?
Yes, it is the station for Nuwara Eliya and nine kilometres from town. Give us the train number and we will meet the actual arrival.
Is Nuwara Eliya worth a night, or just a stop?
One night works well if you want Horton Plains at dawn. If not, it makes a good lunch stop between Kandy and Ella rather than an overnight.
