Negombo exists in most itineraries for one reason: it is twenty minutes from the airport. That makes it the sensible first or last night for anyone arriving at three in the morning or leaving before dawn, and it is a far better plan than starting a five-hour transfer straight off a long-haul flight.

Where we pick up in Negombo

We collect from hotels along the beach strip and from the town. The single most useful thing you can give us is the exact property name: Lewis Place and Porutota Road have dozens of similarly named guesthouses within a few hundred metres, and the lanes running off the main road are narrow, one-way and unlit at night. In the wet months those lanes flood briefly after heavy rain and a car cannot always reach the door.

Getting to and from Negombo

The beach strip along Lewis Place and Porutota Road is walkable, though it is long, the southern and northern ends are a good half hour apart on foot. Tuk-tuks are plentiful and cheap. The fish market and the Dutch canal are at the town end, and the lagoon is worth an hour. For anywhere beyond Negombo, the airport road connects to the E03 and everything else follows from there.

Travel tips for Negombo

If you are landing at 03:00 and heading somewhere five hours away, book a night here instead of the transfer. You will start the real journey rested, in daylight, and the total cost is often lower than the night surcharge on a long transfer. For an early departure the reverse applies: Negombo has plenty of taxis, but not many of them at four in the morning, which is why we recommend booking the airport leg in advance.

About Negombo

The morning fish market at the lagoon is the real thing rather than a tourist attraction, and it is over by nine. The Dutch canal and the old fort gate are a short walk from there. The beach itself is long and functional rather than beautiful. Negombo is a place to sleep off a flight, not a destination. If you have a full day before moving on, the lagoon boat trips are a better use of it than the sand.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Negombo from the airport?

Twelve kilometres, about twenty minutes, and fifteen at night. It is the closest beach town to CMB.

Is it worth staying in Negombo?

For a first or last night, yes, it solves the 3 a.m. arrival problem better than anything else. As a beach destination it is functional rather than special.

Will the driver find my guesthouse?

Give us the exact property name, not just the street. There are dozens of similarly named guesthouses along Lewis Place and Porutota Road.

Can we go straight to Kandy or the south instead?

Yes, and many do. But after a long-haul flight, a night here and an early start the next day is the plan we would recommend.

Are tuk-tuks a reasonable option from the airport?

For one or two people with light luggage in daylight, yes. At 3 a.m. in the rain with suitcases, no.
