Taxi in Galle: private transfers at fixed prices

Around Galle itself, the honest answer is often a tuk-tuk. The Fort to Unawatuna is 10 km and a tuk-tuk does it for a few hundred rupees; agree the fare before you get in, because the Fort gate is where visitors pay double. PickMe is active in Galle and gives a metered price for the same short rides without the negotiation; Uber has fewer drivers here. Both apps struggle the moment you want to leave the coast: a request for the airport or Ella is often accepted then cancelled, and the estimate does not include the expressway tolls or the wait. A pre-booked transfer is a different product, one price for the whole car, tolls included, and a driver who is at the Fort gate at the agreed time.

The coastal train from Colombo Fort to Galle is slow, cheap and runs beside the sea for two and a half hours; it is worth taking mid-trip. It does not serve the airport, which is 140 km north of Colombo, so on arrival day the 2 h 30 road transfer is the practical option. There is no railway to Ella or Yala from Galle: both are road journeys, 4 h 15 to Ella on the A2 and the climb from Wellawaya.

We collect from hotels inside the Fort as close as the lanes allow. Several streets, Pedlar Street and the lanes off Church Street among them, are too narrow for a van, in which case we meet at the nearest accessible corner and help with the bags; it is rarely more than fifty metres. Outside the ramparts we collect anywhere in Galle, Unawatuna, Dalawella, Thalpe and Koggala at the same price. Galle railway station and the bus stand next to it are frequent pickups for travellers arriving on the coastal train and continuing to the south coast or the hills by road; give us the train number and the driver meets the real arrival. On cricket match days at Galle International Stadium, the roads around the Fort close for hours and we agree a pickup point beyond the closure in advance. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup.

Inside the Fort everything is walkable and most of it is pedestrian in practice: the lanes are narrow, one-way and full of people. Outside the ramparts Galle is a busy provincial city where a tuk-tuk is the sensible way to move short distances. The E01 expressway starts at Pinnaduwa, ten minutes from the Fort, and is what makes the airport 2 h 30 away and Colombo city 1 h 45 for 125 km. The coast road, the A2, runs east through Unawatuna (10 km), Ahangama, Weligama (30 km) and Mirissa (35 km), and west through Hikkaduwa (20 km) to Bentota (60 km, 1 h 10). For the hill country, Ella is 4 h 15 by the A2 and the Wellawaya climb; Sinharaja rainforest is 90 km inland, 2 h 30 on narrow roads that justify the van.

The dry season on this coast runs roughly December to April; from May to September the south-west monsoon brings heavy afternoon rain, which does not stop the expressway but does change what you want to do at 15:00. The Fort has almost no vehicle parking and hotel access can mean a short walk with luggage, worth knowing before you book a room on the rampart side. For a flight after midnight, leave Galle around 20:00: 2 h 30 on the road, three hours at the airport, and a 15% night surcharge on pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, shown before you pay. If you are continuing to Ella or Yala, both are road journeys of four hours or less and neither is served by train.

The Fort ramparts at sunset are the obvious thing and genuinely worth it: an hour’s walk around the walls, from the Flag Rock bastion to the lighthouse. The Dutch Reformed Church of 1755 and the Maritime Museum fill a morning. Beyond the walls, Unawatuna and Jungle Beach are fifteen minutes away, Koggala lagoon and the stilt fishermen at Ahangama half an hour east. Galle works as a base for the whole south-west, which is why many travellers stay a week here rather than moving hotels every two nights.
