Galle is a Dutch fort on a headland with a working Sri Lankan city behind it, and since the Southern Expressway opened it has been two and a half hours from the airport rather than most of a day. That single change is why so many itineraries now start here, and why the transfers in and out of Galle are the most predictable we run.

Where we pick up in Galle
We collect from hotels inside the Fort as close as the lanes allow; several streets are too narrow for a van, in which case we meet at the nearest accessible corner and help with bags. Outside the ramparts we collect from anywhere in Galle, Unawatuna, Dalawella and Thalpe. Galle railway station is a frequent pickup for travellers arriving on the coastal train from Colombo and continuing to the south coast by road.
Getting to and from Galle
Inside the Fort, everything is walkable and most of it is pedestrian in practice, the lanes are narrow, one-way, and full of people. Outside the ramparts, Galle is a normal busy town where a tuk-tuk is the sensible way to move short distances. For the beaches. Unawatuna fifteen minutes east, Hikkaduwa twenty minutes north, a car or tuk-tuk is needed, and for anywhere beyond that the expressway makes a car much faster than the coastal road.
Travel tips for Galle
The dry season on this coast runs roughly December to April; from May to September the south-west monsoon brings heavy afternoon rain, which does not stop the expressway but does change what you want to do at 15:00. The Fort has almost no vehicle parking and hotel access can involve a short walk with luggage, worth knowing before you book a room on the rampart side. If you are continuing to Ella or Yala, both are four hours or less by road and neither is well served by train.
About Galle
The Fort ramparts at sunset are the obvious thing and genuinely worth it, an hour’s walk around the walls with the lighthouse at the far end. The Dutch Reformed Church and the Maritime Museum fill a morning. Beyond the Fort, Unawatuna and Jungle Beach are fifteen minutes away, and Koggala lagoon and the stilt fishermen at Ahangama are half an hour east. Galle works well as a base for the whole south-west, which is why many people stay here rather than moving hotels every two nights.
Frequently asked questions
How long is Galle from Colombo Airport?
Two and a half hours for 140 km, almost entirely on the E01 expressway, and it varies very little by time of day. Tolls are included in our prices.
Can a car get inside Galle Fort?
Yes, but the lanes are narrow and some are one-way. We get as close as the street allows; occasionally that means meeting at a corner and walking the last fifty metres.
Is the coastal train from Colombo worth taking?
For the journey itself, yes, it is slow, cheap and hugs the sea. It does not serve the airport, so it works better mid-trip than on arrival.
How far is Mirissa from Galle?
About forty-five minutes east along the A2. Weligama, the beginner surf bay, is ten minutes closer.
Can you take us to Yala for a safari?
Yes. Tissamaharama, the base for Yala, is about three and a half hours east. The safari itself needs its own jeep and a park permit, which is arranged locally.
