Kandy sits in a bowl of hills at 500 m, wrapped around a lake, and it is the hinge of almost every Sri Lankan itinerary. Arrive from the airport, spend a night or two, then head north to Sigiriya or south into the tea country. That position is why the transfers from here matter more than the transfers from anywhere else in the country, and why we run more vehicles out of Kandy than out of Colombo.

Where we pick up in Kandy

We collect from hotels in the city centre, from the properties above the lake on Rajapihilla Mawatha, and from the hill hotels towards Hantana and Digana. Several of those access roads are steep and narrow, so give us the property name rather than a landmark. Kandy railway station is a common pickup for travellers arriving on the Colombo train and continuing by road, and we routinely meet the 15:30 arrival. During the Perahera, pickups inside the cordon are not possible and we agree a meeting point in advance.

Getting to and from Kandy

Kandy is compact enough to walk around the lake, and impossible to drive around at 17:30. The city has a one-way system that funnels everything past the Temple of the Tooth, and on Poya days and during the Esala Perahera whole streets close. Tuk-tuks are everywhere and cheap for short hops. For anything beyond the city. Peradeniya gardens, the hill hotels, Digana, a car makes far more sense than a tuk-tuk once the road starts climbing.

Travel tips for Kandy

Kandy is cooler than the coast but not cold, and it rains more than visitors expect year-round. Hotel choice matters here more than in most Sri Lankan towns: the hill properties have the views and a twenty-minute drive to dinner, the lakeside ones have the noise and everything on foot. If you are heading to Ella next, leave by 09:00, the mountain clouds over in the afternoon and you will have paid for a view you cannot see.

About Kandy

The Temple of the Tooth is the reason most people stop, and the puja times, early morning, late afternoon, are when it comes alive rather than when it is quietest. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are twenty minutes out and deserve half a day. The walk around the lake takes an hour and is the best thing to do at dusk. Beyond that, Kandy is a base rather than a destination: the tea country, the cultural triangle and the Knuckles range are all within a morning’s drive.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Kandy from Colombo Airport?

One hundred kilometres and about two and a half hours, roughly half of it expressway. It is the most-booked first transfer in the country.

What is the best way to get from Kandy to Ella?

The train is the famous journey and takes about seven hours; the car takes four and lets you stop at the tea estates. Many travellers do one each way.

Can a taxi collect me from Kandy railway station?

Yes, and it is one of our most common pickups. Give us the train number and we will be there when it arrives, not when it was scheduled.

Is it worth keeping a driver for a day trip?

For Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa in one day, yes, it is cheaper than three separate transfers and you keep the same driver.

What happens during the Esala Perahera?

Central streets close in the evenings for the procession and drop-offs happen outside the cordon. We agree a meeting point in advance; no operator can drive you to the door on those nights.
