The E03 Airport Expressway runs from Katunayake to the northern edge of Colombo in about twenty-five minutes at any hour. From the exit at Peliyagoda, the remaining distance depends on your neighbourhood: Fort and Pettah are fifteen minutes away at night and forty in the morning peak; Colombo 3, 4 and 7 add another ten to fifteen. Tolls and parking are included in the price shown, and the driver waits sixty minutes free of charge from the moment your aircraft is on stand.

The expressway itself never causes problems. What does is the Galle Road corridor through Colombo 3 and 4 between 07:30 and 09:30 and again from 16:30 to 19:00, when a fifteen-minute hop becomes forty. Drivers heading to Mount Lavinia or Dehiwala in the evening peak will often cut inland via Havelock Road, which looks longer on a map and is usually faster. One genuinely local point: on days when there is a state event or a protest around Galle Face, the entire seafront can close at short notice, and there is no route that avoids the resulting congestion, that is a Colombo fact, not an operator failure.

For a journey this short, the economy sedan is the right answer for two or three people with normal luggage, and spending more buys you very little. The single reason to size up is boot space: the economy sedan takes three cases and a cabin bag, and Sri Lankan sedans have smaller boots than European equivalents. Four people arriving with four checked bags need the comfort sedan, and five or more need the van, a fact that catches out more arrivals than any other on this route.

There is an airport bus to Colombo Fort and it is inexpensive, but it is not a realistic option with checked luggage after a long-haul flight. Ride-hailing apps operate at the airport and are cheaper for a single traveller with a backpack; they are also the source of most of the complaints we hear about cancelled long-distance pickups, which is less of a risk on a 35 km hop. If you are travelling alone with hand luggage and arriving in daylight, an app is a perfectly sensible choice and we will say so. What a booked transfer buys on this route is not speed, it is certainty at an hour when you have none: a named driver, a fixed price and a car that is already there.

Arrivals between 22:00 and 06:00, which covers most European and Gulf flights, get the fastest run of the day, typically forty-five minutes door to door. A night surcharge applies in that window. Daytime arrivals between 08:00 and 10:00 are the slowest. If you are connecting to a domestic flight or a train from Fort, allow ninety minutes rather than sixty, particularly on a weekday morning.
