Taxi from Colombo Airport to Kandy, fixed price private transfer

The route leaves the airport on the E03, joins the E04 Central Expressway as far as Kadawatha or Mirigama depending on conditions, then follows the A1 through Kegalle and Mawanella into Kandy. Expressway sections account for roughly half the distance and a third of the time. Driving time is two and a half hours in light traffic and closer to three and a quarter on a Friday afternoon or a Poya day. The final descent into the city, past the lake, is often the slowest kilometre of the whole journey.

The A1 between Kegalle and Kandy is the pinch point. It is a two-lane road carrying long-distance lorries, local buses and a great deal of overtaking, and it winds continuously for the last 30 km. There is no faster alternative, the parallel routes are worse. Two things reliably cost time: the market at Mawanella, which spills onto the carriageway on weekday mornings, and roadworks on the approach to Kadugannawa, which have been intermittent for years. Rain adds twenty minutes rather than an hour on this route, because the surface drains well. What genuinely changes the timing is a Poya (full moon) day, when temple traffic around Kandy can add 45 minutes in the final few kilometres.

For two or three people this is comfortably an economy sedan route: the distance is short and the expressway does most of the work. Where we would spend more is if you are stopping at Pinnawala, the elephant orphanage is a 5 km detour off the A1 and the parking area is a rough surface, so the van, which sits higher off the ground than either sedan, is worth having if you are also carrying four people and their bags. For five or six travellers it is the obvious choice, with the 8-seat van for seven or eight, and it still parks in central Kandy, where the streets around the lake are tight.

The train to Kandy from Colombo Fort is a genuine pleasure and costs almost nothing, but it does not serve the airport, and the connection from CMB to Fort station adds an hour and a taxi anyway. Intercity buses to Kandy leave from Colombo, not the airport, and are uncomfortable with more than a daypack. For the airport-to-Kandy leg specifically, a private transfer is not a luxury choice, it is the only sensible one. Do the train later, between Kandy and Nanu Oya, which is the beautiful section.

Any departure between 09:30 and 15:00 gives the cleanest run. Avoid arriving in Kandy between 16:30 and 18:30 on weekdays, when the city’s one-way system is at its worst and the last two kilometres can take twenty minutes. If you land early morning, going straight to Kandy works well and you will be there before lunch. During the Esala Perahera in July or August, road closures around the Temple of the Tooth are extensive and your driver will need to drop you further from your hotel than usual, that is not avoidable, and no operator can promise otherwise.
