Taxi from Kandy to Colombo Airport, fixed price private transfer

The A1 out of Kandy through Kadugannawa and Mawanella joins the E04 and then the E03 to the airport. Two and three-quarter hours is our planning figure. Add three hours for international check-in and a thirty-minute buffer, and a 01:30 departure means leaving Kandy at about 19:00 the previous evening. Leaving Kandy in the morning peak is the single most common planning mistake on this route, 07:30 to 09:30 adds forty-five minutes before you have even left the city.

Westbound, the climb out of Kandy to Kadugannawa is the slow section: heavily loaded lorries on a continuous gradient, with limited overtaking. From Mawanella onwards the road opens up. The Mawanella market congestion that hits the inbound journey in the morning affects this direction too, but later in the day. Evening departures, which is what most airport runs are, get the cleanest run of all: after 19:00 the A1 empties, and the expressway is quiet. We build a thirty-minute buffer into every airport-bound transfer as standard, and we would rather you drink coffee at CMB than watch the clock at Kegalle.

Comfort matters more on the way out than on the way in. For an evening departure ahead of a night flight, the comfort van lets four people genuinely rest for the last hour of expressway, which changes how the flight feels. For two travellers the comfort sedan is the right balance. This is also the point in a trip where luggage has grown: a sedan that fitted your bags on arrival may not fit them plus a month of shopping, and it is worth being honest about that at booking rather than at the door.

The train from Kandy to Colombo Fort is excellent and takes about three and a half hours, but it delivers you to Fort station with 35 km and up to an hour of city traffic still to solve. As an airport strategy it only works with a generous margin and a second booking at the end, and the second booking is the one that fails: finding a car at Fort station on a Sunday evening with a flight to catch is not a position to be in. For a night departure it does not work at all, the last useful train arrives too late in the evening to leave a safe connection.

Evening departures from Kandy, from about 18:30, give the fastest and most reliable run. Avoid leaving between 07:30 and 09:30. For a morning flight, leaving at 02:00 is genuinely quicker than 05:00 and the roads are empty, though a night surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00.
