Unawatuna is a crescent bay five kilometres south of Galle, sheltered by a headland at each end, and that geography is the whole story. The reef and the points break the swell, so the water here is calm when the open beaches either side are not. It made Unawatuna the south coast's first family beach and it still is one, though the bay is small and the restaurants now sit close enough to the water that the sand disappears at high tide in places.

Where we pick up in Unawatuna

We collect from anywhere in Unawatuna, Dalawella and Thalpe, and from the Jungle Beach side of the headland. In the narrow lanes behind the bay we will meet you at the nearest point a car can wait rather than block the lane for ten minutes, and your driver will walk in for the bags. Give us the guesthouse name and, if you know it, the lane it sits on: the bay has several properties with near-identical names and that single detail prevents most of the confusion.

Getting to and from Unawatuna

Coming from the airport you leave the E01 at Pinnaduwa, skirt Galle and drop into the bay from the main road above — about two hours and a quarter in total. The village itself is a loop of narrow lanes that a car can enter but not easily turn in, which is why local drivers know exactly where to stop for each guesthouse. Galle is ten minutes away and the reason many people base themselves here rather than inside the fort, where rooms cost considerably more. Tuk-tuks cover the short hops; anything past Koggala is better done with a car.

Travel tips for Unawatuna

The season runs November to April. Unawatuna is at its best early: the bay is calm, the light is good and the restaurant terraces are empty. Erosion has narrowed the beach considerably over the last decade, so the strip of sand in photographs from ten years ago no longer exists everywhere — Dalawella and Thalpe, a few minutes east, have wider beaches and fewer people. The bay swims safely most of the season, which is not true of Mirissa or Weligama on a big swell.

About Unawatuna

The bay itself, the Japanese peace pagoda on the headland at sunset, and Jungle Beach on the far side, which is quieter and reached on foot in fifteen minutes or by road in ten. Snorkelling over the reef is genuinely good at the eastern end. Galle Fort deserves an evening. If you are here between December and April, the whale-watching boats leave from Mirissa forty minutes south, and an early start is unavoidable — they sail at 06:30 and the sea gets rougher as the morning goes on.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Unawatuna from Galle?

Ten minutes by road. Many visitors sleep in Unawatuna and eat inside Galle Fort, which is cheaper than the reverse and takes nothing away from the evening.

How long is the transfer from Colombo airport?

About two hours and a quarter using the E01 expressway, leaving it at Pinnaduwa near Galle.

Is the sea calm enough for children?

In season, yes — the headlands and reef shelter the bay, which is exactly why families have come here for decades. On a big swell the eastern corner stays calmest.

Can your car reach guesthouses in the narrow lanes?

We stop at the nearest point a car can wait and walk in for your luggage. Blocking a lane for ten minutes helps nobody, least of all the people who live on it.
