Colombo is the country’s commercial capital and the place most visitors pass through rather than stay in. It is thirty-five kilometres from the airport, at the top of the southern expressway and the start of the road to Kandy, which makes it a natural hinge point, and a genuinely difficult city to drive in between eight and ten in the morning.

Where we pick up in Colombo
We collect from hotels anywhere in Colombo 1 through 7, from Mount Lavinia and Dehiwala to the south, and from Colombo Fort railway station, which is the arrival point for trains from Kandy and the south coast. For early-morning airport departures we recommend a pickup time based on your terminal check-in rather than on the map, and we build a thirty-minute buffer into every airport transfer as standard.
Getting to and from Colombo
Colombo is spread out and hot, and walking between neighbourhoods is not realistic. Tuk-tuks are everywhere and metered ones are cheap; ride-hailing apps work well within the city. What they do not do reliably is long-distance, which is where a booked transfer is the difference between leaving on time and watching three drivers cancel. The Galle Road corridor through Colombo 3 and 4 is the main artery and the main bottleneck, and every local driver has a preferred inland alternative for the evening peak.
Travel tips for Colombo
Traffic is the entire story of moving around Colombo. The two peaks, 07:30 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:00, can double any journey time within the city, and no route avoids them. Plan airport runs and departures around them, not through them. If you are heading south, note that the expressway entrance at Kottawa is itself thirty to forty minutes from the city centre in traffic, which is time people routinely forget to count.
About Colombo
Galle Face Green at dusk, the Pettah markets in the morning, the Gangaramaya temple, and the National Museum if it rains. Colombo has become considerably more interesting in the last decade, but two nights is plenty for most visitors, and one is defensible if the beach is calling. If you have a single free afternoon, the old Dutch Hospital precinct and a walk along the seafront cover most of what a first visit needs.
Frequently asked questions
How long from Colombo to the airport?
Forty-five minutes at night, up to ninety in the morning peak. The expressway part never varies; the city part is where the time goes.
Is a taxi better than a ride-hailing app in Colombo?
Within the city, apps are cheaper and perfectly good. For long-distance and airport runs, especially before dawn, a booked transfer with a fixed price is far more reliable.
How long is Colombo to Kandy?
About three hours for 115 km on a normal weekday, and closer to three and a half on a Friday afternoon.
Can we be collected from Colombo Fort station?
Yes, and it is a common pickup for travellers arriving by train from Kandy or Galle. Give us the train number rather than the scheduled time.
Is it worth staying in Colombo at all?
One or two nights, yes, particularly at the end of a trip, when a late flight makes a city hotel more practical than a beach two hours further away.
