Matara is the largest town on the south coast and the one visitors most often pass straight through. It is the end of the coastal railway, the junction where the expressway meets the A2, and the administrative centre for the whole southern province — which means it has hospitals, banks and shops that the beach villages do not. Travellers who stop find a Dutch star fort, a genuinely good market and a beach at Polhena with a shallow reef lagoon that is the safest swimming for twenty kilometres in either direction.

Where we pick up in Matara

We collect anywhere in Matara — the fort area, Polhena, Nilwella, the bus station and the hospital — and from the surrounding villages inland. Hotel pickups in Polhena are straightforward; addresses in the older lanes of the fort quarter are not, so give us a landmark. For onward transfers to Ella or Yala, Matara is a common starting point and we schedule around the evening congestion rather than through it.

Getting to and from Matara

The E01 expressway now runs to Matara, which puts Colombo airport about two hours and forty minutes away and makes this the fastest-reached point on the far south coast. The railway ends here too, and the line onward to Beliatta is newer and barely used. Matara is a real town with real traffic: the A2 through the centre is slow between four and seven in the evening, and any transfer timed through that window needs the extra half hour built in rather than hoped away.

Travel tips for Matara

Season is November to April. Matara is not a resort and does not pretend to be, which is exactly why it is useful: if you need a bank, a proper pharmacy, a phone repair or a supermarket while staying on this coast, this is where you come. Polhena is the place to stay if you want the town's practicality with a swimmable beach. The town is also the natural break point on the long drive between the south coast and Arugam Bay or Yala.

About Matara

Polhena beach has a reef-protected lagoon where you can snorkel and, on many mornings, swim with turtles a few metres from the sand — it is calmer and less commercial than the equivalent at Hikkaduwa. The Star Fort, a small Dutch construction of 1765, is in the town centre and takes twenty minutes. Weherahena temple, with its enormous seated Buddha and painted tunnel, is a few minutes inland. Mirissa and its whale boats are twenty minutes west.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the transfer from Colombo airport to Matara?

About two hours forty on the E01 expressway, which now runs all the way to Matara. It is the fastest-reached town on the far south coast.

Is there a good beach in Matara?

Polhena, with a shallow reef lagoon that is the safest swimming on this stretch and where turtles often feed close to shore.

How far is Mirissa?

Twenty minutes west along the A2.

Should I allow extra time for traffic?

Yes, between four and seven in the evening the A2 through the centre is slow. We build the extra half hour into transfers scheduled through that window.
