If you are flying out of Mattala, note that check-in counters open and close on a tighter schedule than at a busy airport, and we plan departures to arrive comfortably before opening rather than after.

Mattala sits on the A18 north of Hambantota, with fast, empty roads in every direction. Tissamaharama and the Yala gate are about an hour away, Tangalle an hour and a quarter, Mirissa two hours and Colombo around four. There is no public transport worth using from the terminal and very little taxi supply on standby, because there is very little traffic: which is precisely why a pre-booked transfer matters more here than at CMB. Arriving without one can mean a long wait.

Verify your arrival airport carefully. A surprising number of travellers book a transfer to the wrong one, because "Colombo" appears in the marketing of flights that in fact land at Mattala, 240 kilometres away. The two are four hours apart by road, and a transfer booked to the wrong terminal is the single most expensive mistake you can make on arrival day. Facilities at Mattala are limited: there is a currency exchange and a small shop, and little else, so buy your SIM card before you leave the terminal if you need one.

Nothing at the airport itself, but the location is excellent. Bundala National Park, a wetland reserve rich in birdlife, is forty minutes away. Yala is an hour. The Hambantota salt pans and the deep-south beaches at Tangalle are both within an hour and a quarter. If you land here in the morning you can genuinely be on an afternoon game drive.
