Taxi in Midigama, private transfers at a fixed price

We collect from any of the guesthouses and surf camps along the A2 and the lanes running down to the reef, including Kabalana at the Ahangama end. Boards travel with you: tell us the number and length when you book and we will send a vehicle with roof bars or a van rather than turn up in a sedan and improvise. That single question, asked at booking rather than at the kerb, prevents the most common problem on this stretch of coast.

The A2 coastal road runs through the village and everything sits on or just off it, which makes vehicle access simple. From Colombo airport allow about two hours and forty-five minutes via the E01 and Galle. The train stops at Midigama halt, a genuinely tiny platform, and the coastal line is the pleasant way to arrive if you travel light. There is nothing here in the way of shops beyond a few small groceries: Weligama, five minutes west, is where you go for a pharmacy, a bank or a proper meal choice.

Season is November to April, with the cleanest mornings before the onshore wind comes up around eleven. Reef breaks mean reef cuts: bring or buy booties and a basic first-aid kit, because the nearest pharmacy is in Weligama. Accommodation is almost entirely small guesthouses run by families, and the good ones fill months ahead in January and February. If you want nightlife, this is the wrong village: Weligama and Mirissa are a short ride away and Midigama goes quiet after dinner.

The breaks, in ascending order of forgiveness: Lazy Left is the gentlest and the reason beginners graduate here from Weligama, Ram's Right is short and sharp, Plantations breaks further out and Rockies is for people who know what they are doing. Kabalana beach at the Ahangama end has sand and a beach break, and is where you go on a flat day. Beyond surfing, Ahangama's stilt fishermen are five minutes east and Galle Fort is thirty-five minutes west.
