Taxi to Wilpattu, private transfers at a fixed price

We collect from the lodges and tented camps strung along the Hunuwilagama access road and from those south of the park on the Kala Oya side, from hotels in Anuradhapura, Nochchiyagama and Puttalam, and from the gate car park when your jeep comes back. Pre-dawn starts are routine here: jeeps leave around 05:15 to reach the counter as the park opens at six, so a 04:45 collection in Anuradhapura surprises nobody. Send us the lodge name rather than a map pin. The access road is unlit and unsigned, elephants use it at night, and mobile coverage thins out well before the gate. Coming from Kalpitiya, count on a little over two hours by way of Puttalam.

The gate is at Hunuwilagama, reached by turning north off the Puttalam–Anuradhapura A12 at Thimbiriwewa junction and following seven to eight kilometres of narrow road past the lodges to the ticket office. Anuradhapura is 45 kilometres away, about an hour; Puttalam some 50 kilometres to the south-west; Colombo airport 180 kilometres and three and a half to four hours through Negombo, Chilaw and Puttalam. Buses on the A12 set you down at Thimbiriwewa, eight kilometres short of the counter, and no tuk-tuk rank waits there. Beyond the barrier only registered safari jeeps may drive, so a private car (ours included) goes no further than the Hunuwilagama ticket office.

February to early October is the dependable window, and June to early September is the true dry stretch, when the villus shrink and pull the animals in. The second inter-monsoon rains of October and November, and the north-east monsoon that runs behind them into January, turn the sand tracks to porridge and close whole sections. Wilpattu itself has no fixed annual closure month the way Yala’s Block 1 does; gates run 06:00 to 18:00 all year. Come for the emptiness rather than for guaranteed cats: the forest is dense, sightlines are short, and a leopard is genuinely harder to find here than at Yala, but when one appears you are not the thirtieth jeep in the queue. Park entry is paid at the Hunuwilagama counter, separately from the transfer, and nothing at all is sold beyond it, so carry your own water for a half or full day out.

The villus are the point. Kumbuk Villu, Panikka Villu, Kokkare Villu and Manikkapola Uttu pull in everything that needs water: buffalo, spotted deer, sambar, mugger crocodile, painted storks and spot-billed pelicans, and the leopards that come down to drink. Sloth bears are the local speciality in June and July, when the palu trees fruit and the bears climb them in broad daylight. Elephants live here too, but thinly spread and shy: this is not Minneriya. Kudiramalai Point, the red coastal cliffs on the park’s western edge tied both to the legend of Prince Vijaya’s landing and to first-century Roman contact, is a long detour and often closed. Between the lakes, expect thick scrub and a lot of sandy track.
