Taxi from Colombo to Kandy, fixed price private transfer

Leaving central Colombo, the E01 and E04 take you clear of the city in about forty minutes, after which the A1 runs through Warakapola, Kegalle and Mawanella to Kandy. Three hours is the honest figure for a weekday departure, two and a half if you leave before 07:00, and three and a half or more on a Friday afternoon or the day before a public holiday. Getting out of Colombo is often the slowest part, allow thirty minutes just to reach the expressway from Colombo 3 or 7 in the morning peak.

Three specific bottlenecks account for most of the variation. Mawanella market spills onto the A1 on weekday mornings. The climb at Kadugannawa has had intermittent roadworks for years and reduces to single-lane working without notice. And the descent into Kandy past the Peradeniya junction backs up every weekday from about 16:30. None of them are avoidable, the parallel routes through Gampola or Hanguranketha are longer and slower. On Poya days, temple traffic around the lake adds a further half hour at the Kandy end. A driver who tells you three hours regardless of departure time has not driven it recently.

The comfort sedan is the right default here rather than the economy car, and the reason is the road surface rather than the distance: the A1 through the hills is patched and uneven in long stretches, and the softer suspension makes a real difference over three hours. For five or more, the van is the right size on this route; the comfort sedan takes four. Kandy’s city centre is congested and the streets around the lake and the Temple of the Tooth are tight, so the shorter vehicle is genuinely easier to park and to turn.

The Colombo–Kandy train is one of the best-value journeys in the country: three and a half hours, a fraction of the cost, and no traffic. First-class observation seats sell out well in advance; second class is comfortable and usually available. If you are travelling light and your schedule is flexible, we would recommend the train over our own service without hesitation. The car wins when you have luggage, when you want a stop at Pinnawala, or when four of you are travelling and the per-person maths reverses.

Leave before 07:00 or between 10:00 and 15:00. The two peaks, 07:30 to 09:30 leaving Colombo, and 16:30 to 18:30 arriving in Kandy, each cost about forty-five minutes. Friday afternoons are the worst of the week in the Colombo-to-Kandy direction, and Sunday evenings the worst in reverse. During the Esala Perahera in July or August, central Kandy is closed to traffic in the evenings and drop-offs happen further from hotels than usual.
