A hundred and twenty-five kilometres, about an hour and forty-five minutes, almost all of it on the Southern Expressway. This is the usual way to move from a city stay in Colombo to the south coast, and it is one of the most dependable drives in Sri Lanka once you are out of the city. The time you actually save or lose is decided in the first half hour, getting across Colombo to the expressway, and at the very end, getting through the gate of Galle Fort to your door.

Journey details

The E01 Southern Expressway starts at Kottawa, on the south-eastern edge of Colombo, and runs to the Pinnaduwa interchange just outside Galle, which is about ten minutes from the fort. The question is how to reach Kottawa. From Colombo 3, 4 or 7 drivers usually head inland through Nugegoda and Maharagama on the High Level Road; from Fort or the north of the city, or when the inner roads are jammed, they may loop out on the Outer Circular Expressway and join the E01 without touching the city streets at all. Total, around a hundred and twenty-five kilometres and an hour and forty-five minutes, with tolls inside the fixed price.

The road

The expressway itself is fast, well surfaced and rarely congested, but it has very few service areas and they are basic, so eat before you leave or wait until Galle. The two variables are at the ends. Getting out of Colombo on a weekday between 07:30 and 09:30 or from 16:30 onwards can add half an hour before Kottawa. At Galle, the fort is entered through its gates in the ramparts and the streets inside are narrow, several one-way, with little space to stop. Most hotels and villas inside the walls can be reached by car, but a few are on lanes where the driver will stop at the corner and carry your bags the last few metres. Give us the property name so we choose the right gate and approach.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Comfort sedan

On a smooth dual carriageway the case for a bigger vehicle is weaker than anywhere else, so choose on luggage and people. Two travellers with cases are comfortable in the economy sedan; three, or two with a lot of luggage, in the comfort sedan, which is also quieter at expressway speed. Families of five or six take the 6-seat van, groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Surfboards heading to the south coast travel inside a van with a row folded, so tell us when you book. Inside Galle Fort a sedan is easier to place at the door than a van, which matters if you are staying within the walls.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

The coastal train from Colombo Fort to Galle is one of the pleasant rail rides in the country, running beside the sea for long stretches, and it is very cheap. It is slower than the expressway and seats fill up, and it leaves you at Galle station, across the road from the fort, with luggage and the last stretch to your hotel still to sort out. Expressway buses are fast and inexpensive, with little room for bags. If you have time, the old A2 coast road is the scenic alternative by car: through Bentota, past the turtle hatcheries at Kosgoda and through Hikkaduwa, adding at least ninety minutes before any stops. Ask for it on WhatsApp after booking and we will arrange the route and the stops.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Colombo mid-morning, after about 09:30, or early in the afternoon, and the hour and forty-five minutes is reliable. Weekday evenings out of the city are the slowest time to start. Night pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a surcharge shown before you pay, and the expressway is quiet then. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain to Galle, which rarely affects the drive but does make a covered drop-off worth asking for. December to April is the dry season in the south. Mid-April, during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, is the one time the E01 genuinely fills. Booking more than fourteen days ahead is slightly cheaper.

How long does the taxi from Colombo to Galle take?

About an hour and forty-five minutes for a hundred and twenty-five kilometres, almost all on the E01 Southern Expressway. Weekday rush hours in Colombo can add half an hour at the start.

Are the expressway tolls included in the price?

Yes. The fixed price covers fuel, tolls, parking and the driver. Nothing is added at the end of the journey.

Can you drop us inside Galle Fort?

Yes. The streets inside the walls are narrow and partly one-way, but most properties can be reached by car. For the few that cannot, the driver stops at the corner and helps with the bags.
