Taxi in Habarana: private transfers at fixed prices

Around the junction, tuk-tuks do the short work: from a lakeside hotel to the bus stand or the Hurulu gate, a three-wheeler costs a few hundred rupees. Agree the fare before you get in, because nobody runs a meter here. PickMe is the weak link. The app covers Habarana on paper, but few cars are based in a village this size, requests at dawn or after dark often go unanswered, and Uber is practically absent. A pre-booked transfer is the opposite: one price agreed in advance and a car at the resort door at 04:30 if your flight needs it.

Buses work if you travel light. The Colombo–Trincomalee, Kandy–Trincomalee and Dambulla–Polonnaruwa services all stop at the junction, but they are crowded and leave you there with your bags. The train is less useful than it looks: Habarana station is on the line that divides at Gal Oya for Trincomalee and Batticaloa, with a handful of trains a day, and Sigiriya and Dambulla have no railway at all.

We collect from every hotel in and around Habarana, from lakeside resorts to forest eco-lodges. Several sit at the end of unlit gravel tracks, so give us the property name rather than just “Habarana”. We also meet trains at Habarana station, waiting for the real arrival, not the timetable. For a safari, the car drops you at the ticket office of Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, where the registered jeeps wait; our car cannot enter the parks, and we sell neither jeep nor ticket. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, an hour at the airport.

Almost nothing in Habarana is on foot: hotels sit on side roads and every park gate is a drive away. South-west, the A6 runs to Dambulla, 25 km and 40 min, then through Kurunegala to Colombo Airport, 165 km. Sigiriya is 15 min away on minor roads. East, the A11 passes the Minneriya entrance on its way to Polonnaruwa, 45 km and 1 h 10. North-east, the A6 crosses the Hurulu forest and passes Kantale on the way to Trincomalee. West, the A11 leads towards Anuradhapura, 60 km in 1 h 25, with Mihintale at 55 km; Wilpattu lies beyond, 120 km and 2 h 40. On the A6 north of Habarana and the A11 past Minneriya, wild elephants cross the road, above all at dusk, and drivers slow right down.

Habarana is hot for most of the year. The main rains fall between October and January, when the inter-monsoon storms and the north-east monsoon turn park tracks to mud. May to September is dry and windy, and the Gathering at Minneriya is strongest in August and early September, when hotels fill early. Climb Sigiriya at opening time or late in the afternoon, never at midday. Jeeps head out in the afternoon for the best elephant light, so a morning at Sigiriya and an afternoon drop at a park gate fit into one day. For the airport, leave with a margin: the drive takes 3 h 40, the airport asks for three hours, and a 15% night surcharge applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, shown before you pay.

Habarana is a base rather than a sight. Minneriya, on the A11, is famous for the Gathering, when hundreds of elephants graze the grass left by the shrinking tank in the dry months; Kaudulla, off the A6, and Hurulu Eco Park, the gate closest to the village, take over when the water moves the herds. Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock fortress of King Kashyapa, is the other reason to stay, with Pidurangala rock beside it for the view back. The Dambulla cave temple, painted and filled with Buddha statues, is on the road south. Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital, deserves a morning for the Quadrangle and the Gal Vihara.
