Taxi in Dambulla: private transfers at a fixed price

For short hops, take a tuk-tuk. They wait at the bus stand, by the cave temple car park and outside most guesthouses, and a ride across town costs a few hundred rupees; agree the fare first, meters are rare here. PickMe has some tuk-tuks and a handful of cars around Dambulla, but availability is patchy, especially early in the morning, and Uber is rarely seen this far from Colombo. Neither app is built for what most visitors need here: a long ride to the airport or the east coast, which drivers accept and then cancel once they see the destination.

Dambulla has no railway station; the nearest are Habarana, on the Trincomalee line, and Matale, and neither serves the airport. Buses are the local backbone, frequent and cheap from the stand on the A9 to Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee, with regular services to Sigiriya. With a backpack and time they work; with suitcases, a flight or a dawn start at Pidurangala they do not. A pre-booked transfer gives you a price agreed in advance and a car at the door at the hour you chose.

We collect from any hotel or guesthouse in town, from the resorts around the Kandalama reservoir and around Inamaluwa junction, where the Sigiriya road leaves the A6. Many addresses here are a landmark rather than a number, so give us the property name. The cave temple car park, beside the Golden Temple, is an easy meeting point after your visit, and the bus stand works for travellers arriving from Kandy. For a jeep safari we drop you where the jeeps leave: the Minneriya ticket office on the A11 or the Kaudulla gate north of Habarana. The transfer ends there. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, an hour at the airport.

Dambulla is one long main street where the A9 passes the market, the bus stand and the cave temple, and it clogs with lorries around the economic centre early and late in the day. The airport is 140 km away, about 3 h 15 on the A6 through Kurunegala, then the Central Expressway for part of the way. Sigiriya is 20 km north-east and Habarana, the junction for the eastern parks, 25 km along the A6. From there the A11 passes the Minneriya park entrance, 45 km from Dambulla, on its way to Polonnaruwa, 60 km and about 1 h 25. North, Anuradhapura is 70 km and Mihintale 65 km. Trincomalee is 120 km up the A6, about 2 h 40; Pasikuda (135 km) and Batticaloa () are reached through Polonnaruwa. South, the A9 runs through Matale, 55 km, towards Kandy.

Dambulla is in the dry zone and hot for most of the year. The main rains come with the north-east monsoon, from around October or November to January. Climb the cave temple early: the rock heats up by midday and shoes come off at the top, so bring socks, and cover shoulders and knees. For sunrise at Pidurangala, leave before dawn; pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, shown before you pay. For an early flight, allow the 3 h 15 drive plus the three hours the airport asks for. The Minneriya and Kaudulla elephants gather in the dry months, roughly June to September, and afternoon jeeps see the most. If you plan Sigiriya, the cave temple and a safari in one day, our private driver by the day usually costs less than three transfers, and the car waits for you.

The cave temple, Rangiri Dambulla, is the reason the town is on the map. Five caves under an overhang of the rock have been a place of worship since the first century BC, with more than 150 statues of the Buddha and ceilings painted wall to wall. The climb takes about twenty minutes up stone steps, and on a clear day the view reaches Sigiriya. The Golden Temple at the bottom, with its giant gilded Buddha, is modern and houses a museum; the ticket office is down there, not at the caves. The Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre is worth a look at dawn, when trucks from the hills unload. East of town, Geoffrey Bawa’s Kandalama hotel of 1994 overlooks its reservoir. Sigiriya and the quieter Pidurangala rock beside it are the classic outing; Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura each deserve a full day.
