Taxi in Tangalle, private transfers at a fixed price

We collect from every bay around Tangalle (Medaketiya, Marakolliya, Rekawa, Goyambokka, Pallikkudawa and Hiriketiya thirty minutes west) as well as from the town itself. Several of the beachfront properties are reached down sand tracks that a saloon car will not attempt after heavy rain; tell us the property name at booking and we will send the right vehicle rather than discover the problem at your gate.

From Colombo airport allow about three hours and a half using the E01 expressway to Matara and then the A2. The southern expressway extension has cut this journey substantially in recent years, and a driver who uses it saves close to an hour over the old coastal route. Locally, distances are real: Goyambokka to Marakolliya is twenty minutes by tuk-tuk, and there is no useful public transport between the bays. Anyone staying more than three days here usually ends up hiring a car and driver for at least one of them.

The season is November to April; the sea at Tangalle has strong currents on several of the open beaches even then, and the bays with reef protection (Goyambokka, Silent Beach) are the ones that swim safely. Ask locally rather than assuming, because this stretch of coast has a genuine reputation for rip currents. Tangalle is also the natural staging post between the south coast and Yala, which is why many itineraries put two nights here rather than backtracking from Mirissa.

Rekawa beach, twenty minutes east, is one of the most reliable turtle nesting sites in Sri Lanka, and the conservation project runs nightly guided watches: go with them rather than alone. Mulkirigala rock temple, half an hour inland, is a series of cave shrines up a rock staircase with a view over the whole coastal plain, and it receives a fraction of Dambulla's visitors for a comparable experience. Yala's western entrance is ninety minutes east, close enough for a very early morning safari and back.
