About twenty kilometres north-west on the A2 to the Beliatta interchange, then the E01 and E03 the whole way to the terminal. Two hundred and twenty kilometres, three hours forty, tolls inside the price. For a 01:30 flight the pickup lands around 18:20; for an 11:00 departure, around 03:50. Only that first twenty kilometres is ordinary road, which is why the figure is as dependable as it is.

The beach lanes are the part to plan. Properties at Goyambokka, Medaketiya and out towards Rekawa sit on sand and broken concrete tracks off the A2; a car manages nearly all of them, a loaded van fewer, and after heavy rain some are not passable at all, in which case the driver gets as close as the surface allows and no closer. On a departure that is worth knowing the night before rather than at dawn. The other local point concerns the sea rather than the road: several of these beaches shelve steeply with a strong undertow, and a last swim on the morning of a flight is not the moment to find that out.

Nearly four hours at expressway speed, so the comfort sedan over the economy car is a defensible upgrade for two people and the answer for four with luggage; the comfort van takes five or six. The Tangalle-specific caveat is the one above: the van is the vehicle most likely to be stopped short by a soft sand lane, and on a departure that means carrying cases further than you would like. There is no train to Tangalle; the coastal line stops at Matara, thirty-five kilometres short, and the connection costs as much time as the entire expressway section. Buses run to Matara and Hambantota with the same gap and very little luggage space. For a flight this is a road journey and there is no honest alternative, which is precisely why the expressway extension changed this town: the drive that used to be a full commitment is now a comfortable half-morning.

The expressway does not queue, so choose the hour that suits your flight rather than the traffic. Night departures are quicker and attract a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. The dry season runs December to April; from May to September there is more swell than rain at this end of the coast, and the drive is unaffected either way. The one date to build around is mid-April, when the New Year fills the expressway and an extra hour is not paranoia. With a late flight, the car can collect you at check-out and stop at Mulkirigala or Hummanaya on the way north.
