Beruwala is the stretch of the west coast that runs from the fishing harbour down to the edge of Aluthgama, just north of Bentota. Large resort hotels, many of them all-inclusive, line the sand side by side, and a good share of their guests fly in from Germany and Russia for two weeks of sun between November and April. For most of them the taxi matters twice: the ride from the airport on the first night and the ride back on the last day, with one or two outings along the coast in between. Our cab service handles those trips at a fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person: an economy or comfort sedan, a six-seat or an eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, expressway tolls and parking included. You book and pay the full price online by card, and nothing is due to the driver on the day; if you prefer, pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Colombo Airport to Beruwala is 90 km, about 1 h 40, from $50 (Rs 16,000), and Beruwala to Bentota is a short 10 km hop from $35 (Rs 11,000).

Beruwala

Ketchimalai Mosque and Beruwala fishing harbour

Allow 1 h

At the northern end of the bay, the white Ketchimalai Mosque stands on a rocky headland where Arab traders are said to have landed centuries ago, making Beruwala one of the oldest Muslim settlements on the island. Below it, the fishing harbour comes alive at dawn as multi-day boats unload tuna for the auction, with the Barberyn lighthouse on its islet offshore. Go at first light with your driver and be back for breakfast. Dress modestly and avoid Friday midday prayers.

Best time : Dawn for the auction; not Friday noon

Beruwala

Kande Vihara giant seated Buddha

≈ 15 min by carAllow 1 h

Just inland from Beruwala near Aluthgama, Kande Vihara is an old hillside temple now crowned by a huge seated Buddha, among the tallest seated statues in the world, visible above the palms from the surrounding roads. Walk round the older shrines beneath it and look back towards the coast. It is a short drive, ideal for late afternoon after a day on the beach. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the steps.

Best time : Late afternoon, softer light

Beruwala

Brief Garden (Bevis Bawa’s garden)

≈ 30 min by carAllow 1 h 30

Inland from Beruwala, on a quiet hill near Bentota, Brief Garden is the landscaped estate of Bevis Bawa, brother of the architect Geoffrey Bawa: terraces, sculptures, ponds and a house full of artworks among the rubber trees. The lanes are narrow and poorly signposted, which is exactly where a driver earns his keep. Combine it with the river at Bentota for a full half-day, and bring mosquito repellent for the shaded paths.

Best time : Morning, dry season

Beruwala

Kosgoda sea turtle hatcheries

≈ 35 min by carAllow 1 h

South of Bentota on the coast road, Kosgoda is known for its sea turtle hatcheries, where eggs collected from the beach are reburied and the hatchlings released into the sea. They vary a great deal in how seriously they work, so look for one that lets the young go quickly rather than keeping them in tanks for show. From Beruwala the stop combines well with Ambalangoda further south. Go in the late afternoon, as releases sometimes happen at dusk.

Best time : Late afternoon, November to April

Beruwala

Bentota River boat safari

15 min by car · 10 kmAllow 2 h 30

Bentota is a short hop south of Beruwala, and its river offers the easiest boat trip on this coast: an hour or two upstream through mangroves, past water monitors, kingfishers, the odd crocodile and village landings along the banks. The driver drops you at a jetty and either waits or comes back, then you have the beach at Bentota or lunch before heading home. Morning light is best for birds, and the water is calmer.

Beruwala

Ambalangoda masks and puppets

40 min by car · 30 kmAllow 1 h 30

Ambalangoda, down the coast from Beruwala, is the home of Sri Lanka’s carved masks and one of the last strongholds of rukada string puppetry. In the family museums you see kolam and sanni masks next to the benches where they are made from light kaduru wood. Make a day of it with the driver: Kosgoda turtles on the way down, masks in the late morning, the coast road back before the evening buses. Feel the weight before buying: a real mask is very light.

Beruwala

Kalutara hollow stupa and sacred Bodhi

20 min by car · 15 kmAllow 1 h

North of Beruwala, where the Kalu Ganga meets the sea, Kalutara’s white chaitya is said to be the only stupa you can walk into, with painted panels inside and a sacred Bodhi tree beside it, on ground once held by a Dutch fort. From Beruwala it is an easy half-day, or a natural break on the way to or from the airport with the luggage locked in the car. Go just before dark, when the interior is lit.

Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Beruwala?

The coastal railway runs through Beruwala, but most fast trains stop at Aluthgama, a few minutes south. With a light bag, the train to Colombo Fort or down to Galle is cheap and pleasant, and it runs right along the sea. It does not serve the airport, though, and with suitcases the changes in Colombo are hard work. Buses on the Galle Road are frequent and very cheap, and crowded at most hours. Tuk-tuks wait outside the hotels and along the main road: good for the harbour, the mosque or dinner in Aluthgama, as long as you agree the fare before you get in. App cabs such as PickMe appear around Kalutara and Aluthgama, but drivers are thin on the ground, and an app car at 03:00 for the airport is a gamble. Hotel desks can arrange cars too, at their own rate. A booked cab with a price fixed in advance is the simple answer for the airport and for any trip with luggage.

Where we pick up in Beruwala

Most pickups in Beruwala are at the big resorts, and the car comes right up to the reception porch. Many hotels have a gate with a security guard who notes the car before letting it in, so the driver allows a few minutes for that. Give us the exact hotel name when you book: several properties have similar names and some share a stretch of beach road. Smaller guesthouses and villas sit on narrow lanes behind the beach and towards the harbour; send the name and, if you have it, a map pin. We also collect from Beruwala and Aluthgama stations and from restaurants on the Galle Road. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, and the driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp before the day. For the airport run, we suggest a pickup time based on your flight, and you can hand the luggage to the driver at reception.

Getting to and from Beruwala

The A2, the old Galle Road, runs straight through Beruwala a few hundred metres back from the beach, with the hotels on lanes leading down to the sand. It is a busy road, full of buses and tuk-tuks, and fine for short trips along the coast. For anything longer the driver heads inland to the E01 Southern Expressway, which runs parallel to the coast. Towards the airport it takes the E01 north, the Outer Circular Expressway around Colombo and the Katunayake Expressway, so the city centre is avoided: 90 km in about 1 h 40, tolls included. Colombo city is 60 km, about 1 h 10, Mount Lavinia 50 km, about 1 h, and Negombo, for a last night near the airport, 95 km, about 1 h 40. North along the coast, Kalutara is 15 km, about 20 min. South, Bentota is 10 km, about 15 min, Ambalangoda 30 km, about 40 min, and Hikkaduwa 45 km, about 55 min, with Galle further on. Inland, Ratnapura, the gem town, is 65 km, about 1 h 35 on winding roads. Mattala airport in the south is 145 km, about 2 h 30.

Travel tips for Beruwala

The sea at Beruwala is calm and swimmable from about November to April. From May to September the south-west monsoon sends a heavy swell onto the beach: hotels stay open and rates drop, but red flags fly and the currents are strong, so swim only where the hotel says it is safe. Many flights from Europe land in Colombo late in the evening or in the small hours; pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, shown before you pay, and we track your flight so the driver waits for the real arrival. For the return, count the drive time plus three hours at the airport, and leave a little earlier on weekday mornings when the Colombo area is busy. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off. Child seats are free on request: say so when you book. If you plan several outings with the same car, our car hire with driver, on the private driver page, often works out better than separate transfers.

About Beruwala

The Ketchimalai mosque stands on the rocky headland at the northern end of the bay, white against the sea. Tradition holds that Arab traders landed here many centuries ago, and Beruwala is often described as one of the first Muslim settlements on the island; the mosque is still a place of worship, so dress modestly, take your shoes off and avoid prayer times, Friday midday above all. Right below it is the fishing harbour, busiest early in the morning when the multi-day boats unload tuna and the auction starts on the quay. Out in the bay, on a small island, stands the Barberyn lighthouse, a colonial-era tower that you see from almost every beach in Beruwala; ask locally whether boats go out, as it depends on the sea.

North along the coast, the great hollow white stupa at Kalutara stands on the bank of the Kalu Ganga and is an easy half-day. South of Bentota, Induruwa and Kosgoda have sea turtle hatcheries on the beach; they vary in how seriously they work, so it is worth asking before you pay. Ambalangoda, further south, is known for its carved wooden masks. Inland from Bentota, the Brief Garden and Lunuganga, the two Bawa gardens, fill an afternoon.
