Mount Lavinia taxi & cab service at fixed prices
Taxi from Mount Lavinia from $35 (Rs 11,000) per vehicle, not per person
Mount Lavinia is the beach suburb just south of Colombo: a long strip of sand, the railway running along the shore, fishing boats, seafood restaurants on the beach at night and, on a small headland, the white colonial Mount Lavinia Hotel. Many travellers spend their first or last night in Sri Lanka here, by the sea rather than in the city centre, and that makes the airport transfer the ride that matters. Our taxi service gives you a fixed price for the whole vehicle, economy or comfort sedan, six-seat or eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, expressway tolls and parking included. You book and pay the full price online by card, so there is nothing to pay the driver at the hotel door on the day; if you prefer, you can pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, for 10% more. Mount Lavinia to Colombo Airport is 45 km, about 55 min on a clear road and more at rush hour, from $35 (Rs 11,000); Mount Lavinia to Bentota is 55 km, about 1 h 05, from $35 (Rs 11,000).

Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Mount Lavinia?
Mount Lavinia is part of greater Colombo, so you have real choices, and we would rather say so. PickMe and Uber both work well here, with cars and tuk-tuks, and for a ride into the city, to Dehiwala zoo or to a restaurant they are quick and cheap. They also take you to the airport, often for less than a booked transfer when the road is quiet. What they do not give you is a price fixed in advance whatever the traffic, a driver who tracks your flight and waits 60 minutes at arrivals at no charge, or a van booked for six or eight people and their suitcases. At 03:00 for an early flight, or with a family and luggage, that is what a pre-booked cab is for.
Mount Lavinia station is on the coastal railway line. Trains run north to Colombo Fort and south along the sea towards Kalutara, Bentota and Galle; they are cheap and scenic, and crowded at commuting hours. The railway does not serve the airport in any practical way. Buses run constantly along Galle Road in both directions. Tuk-tuks are everywhere; some have meters, otherwise agree the fare before you get in.

Where we pick up in Mount Lavinia
We collect from any hotel, guesthouse or apartment in Mount Lavinia, including the Mount Lavinia Hotel on Hotel Road and the guesthouses in the lanes between Galle Road and the beach. Some of those lanes are narrow or one-way, so give us the property name and the driver finds the best place to stop. For an address in Dehiwala, Ratmalana or further inland, type it in the booking form: the fixed price is calculated on the road distance and shown before you pay. From Colombo Airport, the driver meets you in the arrivals hall; we track your flight, and 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free. Everywhere else, fifteen minutes of waiting are included. The driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp before the day.
Getting to and from Mount Lavinia
Everything here is organised along Galle Road, the main road down the west coast, which runs parallel to the beach and the railway. Colombo city centre is 10 km north, about 15 min outside rush hour; Galle Road is slow on weekday mornings and late afternoons, and the timings stretch then. Colombo Airport is 45 km, about 55 min: the driver takes the city roads to the Colombo to Katunayake expressway or another route depending on the hour. Negombo, the beach town beside the airport, is 45 km, about 55 min. South, Kalutara is 35 km, about 45 min, and Bentota 55 km, about 1 h 05, by Galle Road or the Southern Expressway. Ratnapura, inland, is 80 km, about 1 h 50. Mattala airport in the south is 200 km, about 3 h 20 by the expressway.
Travel tips for Mount Lavinia
The sea at Mount Lavinia is at its calmest from about December to April. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain, big waves and strong currents, and swimming is often unsafe; ask your hotel and respect the flags. The railway runs right along the beach: cross only at the proper crossings, trains come fast and often. For a flight, plan the airport ride around Galle Road: outside rush hour it is about 55 min, but on a weekday morning or late afternoon give yourself much more. For night flights, a pickup between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% night surcharge, shown before you pay, and the roads are empty. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season supplement applies, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off. For a tour of the island starting from here, the car hire with driver on our private driver page covers several days with the same car.
About Mount Lavinia
The Mount Lavinia Hotel is the landmark. It began as the seaside residence of a British governor of Ceylon in the early nineteenth century, later became a hotel, and its terrace over the sea is the classic place for a sunset drink; non-residents can usually come for a drink or a meal. Local legend links the name to Lovinia, a dancer the governor is said to have loved. The beach runs north from the hotel, lined in the evening with restaurants that put tables on the sand and grill the day’s catch.
The National Zoological Gardens at Dehiwala, one of the older zoos in Asia, are a short tuk-tuk ride away. Colombo city is close enough for an afternoon: Galle Face Green at sunset, the Gangaramaya temple, the markets of Pettah and the National Museum. For a day further south, the coast road leads to Kalutara and its white stupa by the river, and to the beaches of Bentota.
