Kalpitiya taxi & cab service at fixed prices
Taxi from Kalpitiya from $58 (Rs 18,500) per vehicle, not per person
Kalpitiya is a long, flat peninsula on Sri Lanka’s north-west coast, with the Indian Ocean on one side and the wide Puttalam lagoon on the other. Strong, steady wind over flat lagoon water has made it the country’s kitesurfing centre, and in the calmer months boats go out to find large pods of dolphins offshore. It is a long drive north of Negombo, and there is only one road onto the peninsula, so most visitors arrive by car. Every taxi and transfer from Kalpitiya has a fixed price for the whole vehicle: an economy sedan for up to three people, a comfort sedan for four, or a six- or eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. You pay the full price online by card when you book, so nothing changes hands with the driver on the day; if you prefer, you can pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Kalpitiya to Colombo Airport is 135 km, about 2 h 20, from $75 (Rs 23,500). Kalpitiya to Wilpattu National Park is 105 km, about 2 h 25, from $70 (Rs 21,500), and Sigiriya is 165 km, about 3 h 40, from $95 (Rs 29,000).

Things to do by taxi around Kalpitiya
Half-day and day trips from Kalpitiya that travellers book again and again, with the drive time and the fixed price per car. Swipe through, pick one, and book the ride.
Prices are per vehicle and fixed before you book. For several stops in one day with the car waiting for you, a driver for the day is usually simpler.
Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Kalpitiya?
On the peninsula, the tuk-tuk is the only cab service in practice. Drivers wait in Kalpitiya town and along the main road, and they know the sand tracks to the lagoon camps; agree the fare before you go. PickMe and Uber are effectively absent here, and a request from Colombo for a car all the way to Kalpitiya is not something the apps handle well.
There is no railway on the peninsula. Slow trains run from Colombo to Puttalam, but from there you still need a bus or a tuk-tuk for the rest of the way, and nothing links the train to the airport. Buses run often between Colombo and Puttalam along the coast road through Negombo and Chilaw, and local buses continue up the peninsula to Kalpitiya; it works on a backpacker budget, much less well with a kite bag, a board and a suitcase. Domestic flights are not an option for Kalpitiya. For the arrival from the airport and the trip back, a car booked in advance, with room for your gear and one agreed price, saves most of a day.

Where we pick up in Kalpitiya
We collect from any hotel, kite camp, lodge or guesthouse on the Kalpitiya peninsula, from Kalpitiya town and the lagoon shore to the beach resorts on the ocean side. Give us the exact property name when you book: many camps sit at the end of sand tracks with no street address, and some tracks are too soft for a sedan, especially after rain. Where that is the case, we agree a meeting point on the tarmac with you or your lodge on WhatsApp. Kite gear travels with you: tell us when booking how many boards and kite bags you carry, and we send a vehicle with room for them; with more than a couple of boards, the six-seat van is the safe choice. Arriving at Colombo Airport, your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board; we track the flight and include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and the airport to Kalpitiya costs $75 (Rs 23,500). Everywhere else, 15 minutes of waiting are included, and the driver’s name, phone number and vehicle reach you on WhatsApp before pickup.
Getting to and from Kalpitiya
The peninsula road leaves the Colombo to Puttalam road at Palavi, just south of Puttalam, and runs north for most of its length past Norochcholai and the lagoon villages to Kalpitiya town at the tip. Kite camps and lodges are spread along the lagoon shore and on the ocean side, many of them down sand tracks off this road. Colombo Airport is 135 km south, about 2 h 20, via Puttalam, Chilaw and Negombo; the airport lies just south of Negombo, so a Negombo hotel is almost the same drive. East, the A12 leaves Puttalam for Anuradhapura, 105 km and about 2 h 25, with Mihintale a little further on (125 km, 2 h 50). Wilpattu National Park’s main entrance, on the eastern side of the park, is 105 km and about 2 h 25. Across the dry zone to the cultural triangle, Dambulla is 150 km and about 3 h 20, Sigiriya 165 km and about 3 h 40. Jaffna, in the far north, is 265 km and about 5 h 45.
Travel tips for Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya lies in the dry zone: hot, sunny and windy for much of the year, with most rain in the inter-monsoon months, around October and November. The two seasons pull in different directions. From May to October the wind is at its strongest, ideal for kiting, but the sea is too rough for most dolphin trips; from November to April the sea calms and the dolphin boats run, while the kite wind is lighter and less regular. Choose your dates for what you came to do. The drive from the airport takes 2 h 20; after a long flight, consider a first night in Negombo and an unhurried morning drive. For Wilpattu safaris, which start early, it often makes more sense to sleep near the park the night before than to leave Kalpitiya in the dark. A 15% night surcharge applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, a 10% high-season supplement from 15 December to 15 January, and you pay 5% less when you book more than 14 days ahead; everything is shown before you pay. On the peninsula road, watch for cyclists, cattle and fish lorries. For several days combining Kalpitiya, Wilpattu and Anuradhapura with the same driver, book our car hire with driver on /private-driver; extra stops on a transfer are arranged on WhatsApp after booking.
About Kalpitiya
Kitesurfing is the main draw. The Kalpitiya lagoon and the smaller lagoons around it offer wide stretches of flat, shallow water, with wind that blows strongly and steadily through the main season, roughly May to October, and a second, shorter and lighter season around December to March. Kite schools and camps rent gear and teach on the lagoon; you book them directly, not through us. Experienced riders also make trips to the islands in the lagoon mouth for flat-water spots.
From roughly November to April, when the sea is calmer, boats leave Kalpitiya early in the morning to look for spinner dolphins, often in very large groups, and sometimes whales further out. The Bar Reef marine sanctuary lies offshore, with coral for snorkelling and diving in the same calm months. Boats are paid locally and sightings are never guaranteed. On land, the peninsula is quiet fishing and farming country: dried fish laid out in the sun, salt pans near Puttalam and palmyra palms. Kalpitiya town has a seventeenth-century Dutch fort inside a navy area, so ask locally whether visitors are admitted. St Anne’s church at Talawila, on the ocean shore, is one of the country’s great Catholic pilgrimage sites and fills up on feast days. Wilpattu, Sri Lanka’s largest national park, known for its leopards, sloth bears and natural lakes called villus, is the classic excursion; jeeps and park tickets are arranged at the park, and we take you to the entrance.
