South-west on the A6 through Kurunegala, then the E03 to the terminal. One hundred and forty kilometres, three hours fifteen. For a 01:30 flight the pickup lands around 18:45; for a 09:00 departure, around 02:15. The road is good enough that we plan to the quarter hour rather than the half, which on a long departure day is worth something: it is forty-five minutes of your last morning that you do not have to spend as insurance.

Dambulla junction is where the island’s wholesale vegetable market sits, and it trades overnight. Between roughly midnight and six the roads around it carry lorry traffic from half the country, which is precisely the window in which passengers leave for early flights. It is not dangerous, but it is slow and loud, and your driver will approach from a different direction at four in the morning than at four in the afternoon. Beyond that, the A6 passes through the centre of Kurunegala, where the one-way ring around the clock tower costs ten to fifteen minutes in the middle of the day. Hotels around Kandalama lake sit several kilometres off the main road on quiet tracks where elephants occasionally cross at dusk.

The road asks nothing special, so choose on space and heat. Air conditioning matters here more than on the coast: the cultural triangle is the warmest part of the island and a daytime departure spends three hours in it. The economy sedan carries two people and their luggage comfortably; four with cases fit the comfort sedan, and five or six need the comfort van. If you have had a car and driver for the triangle over two or three days, extending that arrangement to the airport is cheaper than a separate booking and saves moving luggage between vehicles on the last morning.

There is no useful train from Dambulla, and the nearest line at Habarana has poor connections and a slow run to Colombo. Intercity buses are cheap and reasonably quick to the capital but leave you at a bus station with thirty-five kilometres and your bags still to solve, at whatever hour you arrive. For a departure with a fixed time, the direct car is the only arrangement with a single point of failure, which is the same conclusion as on the way in and for the same reasons.

Almost any hour works. Avoid arriving at Kurunegala between noon and two, and expect the Dambulla junction to be busy between midnight and six. Night departures are otherwise the quickest and attract a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. May to September is the dry season in the triangle; the north-east monsoon from November into December brings heavy rain that affects the temple steps more than the road. With an evening flight, the cave temple is on your doorstep and worth the morning: it is a long flight of unshaded steps, so before ten or after three.
