A taxi from Galle to Mirissa is a 35 km coastal drive of about 45 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle, from your hotel in Galle Fort or anywhere in Galle to your guesthouse in Mirissa. It is a short transfer, but a pleasant one: the A2 hugs the south coast past Unawatuna, the stilt fishermen of Koggala and the long bay at Weligama, and for most travellers it marks the move from the old fort town to the beach and the whale-watching boats.

Journey details

If you are staying inside the fort, the car comes through the main gate and picks you up at your door; the lanes are narrow and partly one-way, so the driver may wait round the corner and walk to you. The route then leaves Galle on the A2 heading east, past the Unawatuna junction and the turn for the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala hill, through Habaraduwa and along Koggala, with the lagoon on one side and the old airstrip on the other. After Ahangama and Midigama, both surf villages, the road curves around Weligama bay and climbs briefly over the headland into Mirissa. Most guesthouses are on the lanes between the A2 and the beach, or up the hill towards Coconut Tree Hill. On a clear road the drive takes about 45 minutes. Some drivers use the Southern Expressway from Galle to the Kokmaduwa exit when the coast road is jammed, which saves the town centres but rarely much time.

The road

The A2 here is a two-lane coast road lined almost continuously with houses, shops, guesthouses and bus stops, so the average speed is low even without traffic. Intercity buses on the Galle to Matara route stop wherever a passenger waves, and tuk-tuks pull out without warning. The slow points are the Galle town centre near the bus stand, the junction at Unawatuna, Ahangama when the surf schools are loading boards, and Weligama town around the market. School traffic between 07:00 and 08:00 and again around 13:30 adds ten minutes. The stilt fishermen at Koggala and Ahangama perch on poles just off the beach beside the road; some now pose for photographs for a tip, and your driver can pull over safely if you want to stop.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For a 45-minute coastal hop the economy sedan suits nearly everyone: up to three passengers and three bags, air conditioning and no climbing. Choose the comfort sedan if you are four, or if you have large hard-shell cases that will not fit three in the boot. Families with surfboards, or groups of five or six, should take the 6-seat comfort van; boards travel inside, so mention them when you book. Groups of seven or eight take the 8-seat van. Some Mirissa guesthouses sit on steep, narrow lanes where a van cannot turn, and the driver will stop at the nearest safe point. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

This is one of the few transfers where cheaper options really work. Buses run every few minutes along the A2 between Galle and Matara and stop in Mirissa, though they are crowded and a big rucksack is the limit. The coastal train from Galle stops at Weligama, a short tuk-tuk ride from Mirissa, and is scenic but infrequent. A tuk-tuk from Galle to Mirissa is common and takes a little longer than a car, with luggage strapped on behind. Ride-hailing apps work in Galle some of the time. The private car is worth it when you have proper luggage, children, a fixed check-in time, or want stops at Koggala or Weligama without negotiating every one.

Best time to travel this route

The south coast season runs from about December to April, when the sea at Mirissa is calm and the whale-watching boats go out most mornings, usually leaving the harbour soon after dawn. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough seas, rain squalls and red flags on many beaches, though the road itself stays open. For a check-in day, a mid-morning departure after the school rush gets you to Mirissa for lunch. If you plan a whale trip the next morning, arrive the day before rather than relying on a pre-dawn transfer; pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Galle to Mirissa?

A private taxi from Galle to Mirissa costs $35 (LKR 11,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $39 (LKR 12,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $46 (LKR 14,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $55 (LKR 17,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 35 km journey, about 45 min of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long is the drive from Galle to Mirissa?

About 35 km and about 45 minutes on the A2 coast road. Weligama town and school hours are the usual causes of delay.

Can we stop to see the stilt fishermen on the way?

Yes. They are right beside the road at Koggala and Ahangama. A quick photo stop is easy; a longer stop, say a Koggala lagoon boat ride, is added to the quote when you book or on WhatsApp.

Is a tuk-tuk or bus a better idea than a taxi?

For one or two people with small bags, a tuk-tuk or the A2 bus is perfectly fine on this short hop. The car makes sense with large luggage, children, surfboards or a fixed time to meet.

Can you pick us up inside Galle Fort?

Yes. The car enters the fort, and the driver meets you at your hotel; on the narrowest lanes he may park nearby and walk to your door.

Can we carry surfboards?

Yes, inside the vehicle. Mention them when you book so we send a car with the space, usually the 6-seat comfort van.

How do I pay?

The fixed price is paid in full online by card at booking, so there is nothing to pay the driver. On the last screen you can choose to pay 50% online and the rest in cash, in which case the trip costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
