Journey details
The driver leaves Galle and joins the E01 Southern Expressway at the Pinnaduwa interchange, a few minutes inland from the fort. From there it is a fast, fenced motorway north through rubber, cinnamon and paddy land, well away from the coast, with a service area at Welipenna for a coffee and toilet break. The expressway ends at Kottawa on the southern edge of Colombo, and the final stretch is through the suburbs: Maharagama and Nugegoda on the High Level Road towards Colombo 5, 4 and 7, or across to the Galle Road for Wellawatte and Kollupitiya. For Mount Lavinia and Dehiwala, the driver often leaves the expressway earlier at Kahathuduwa and cuts across to the coast. The expressway part takes barely an hour; it is the last 15 km in the city that decide whether the trip takes an hour and a half or two.
The road
The E01 is the best road in the south: two lanes each way, a speed limit of 100 km/h, almost no junctions, and a toll plaza at each exit that is included in your price. Your driver will not use the old coastal Galle Road unless you ask, because through Hikkaduwa, Bentota, Kalutara and Panadura it takes well over three hours. The weak point is the end of the expressway. At Kottawa the traffic funnels into the suburbs, and on weekday evenings between about 16:30 and 19:30 the High Level Road through Maharagama and Nugegoda can be at walking pace. Sunday evenings bring the whole weekend crowd back from the south at once. In Colombo itself, one-way systems around Fort and Pettah and the security perimeter near some government buildings mean the driver may approach your hotel from an unexpected side.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Comfort sedan
On a motorway, every car rides well, so this is a decision about space. Two people with normal cases are comfortable in the economy sedan. If you are four, or you have accumulated surfboards, batik and tea on the coast, take the comfort sedan; a family of five or six with luggage, the 6-seat comfort van. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Business travellers heading to a meeting often choose the comfort sedan for the quieter cabin and the room to work on a laptop on the expressway. Child seats are free on request, and the driver can stop at Welipenna if anyone needs a break.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
The coastal railway from Galle to Colombo Fort is a genuinely good alternative: about two and a half to three hours, with the sea right beside the track for much of the way, and Fort station is central. Express trains are busy and second class is often standing room at weekends. Air-conditioned expressway buses run from Galle to the transport hub at Makumbura near Kottawa, from where you still need a taxi into the city with your bags. Ride-hailing apps work well within Colombo but are not reliable for a pickup in Galle. The private car is the quickest door to door, and the only option that takes you straight to the hotel entrance.
Best time to travel this route
Time the arrival, not the departure. Leaving Galle at around 09:30 or 10:00 brings you into Colombo before lunch, after the morning rush and before the evening one. A 14:00 departure is also comfortable. Avoid arriving between 16:30 and 19:30 on weekdays, and Sunday afternoons all year, when the expressway is full of returning weekenders. Weather has little effect on the E01, though south-west monsoon downpours from May to September can slow the Colombo streets for an hour. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and travel between 15 December and 15 January carries the 10% high-season rate.

How much is a taxi from Galle to Colombo?
A private taxi from Galle to Colombo costs $70 (LKR 22,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $80 (LKR 25,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $95 (LKR 29,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $115 (LKR 35,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
How long is the drive from Galle to Colombo?
About 125 km and about 1 hour 45 minutes on the E01 Southern Expressway. In the evening rush the city end can add another half hour.
Train or taxi from Galle to Colombo?
The coastal train is scenic and drops you at Fort station, but it takes two and a half to three hours and is crowded at weekends. The taxi is quicker and goes to your hotel door.
Can we go along the coast instead of the expressway?
Yes, if you want to stop at Bentota or a turtle hatchery at Kosgoda. It takes well over three hours on the Galle Road, and stops are added to your quote; ask when you book.
Is this the right page for Colombo airport?
No. This page goes to Colombo city. Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, north of the city, and has its own transfer page from Galle.
Are tolls included?
Yes. Expressway tolls, fuel and parking are all in the fixed price, and there is nothing to pay on the way.
How do I pay?
The fixed price is paid in full online by card when you book, and nothing is due to the driver. If you prefer, the last screen offers 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, but the trip then costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
