A taxi from Hikkaduwa to Mirissa is a short beach-to-beach hop: 55 km and about 1 hour 5 minutes along the south coast, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle. It is one of the most common moves on the island once people have settled into the beach part of a trip, swapping Hikkaduwa’s reef, surf breaks and busy main strip for the smaller bay at Mirissa, its whale-watching boats and the palm-covered headland at Coconut Tree Hill. The driver collects you from your hotel or guesthouse anywhere along the Hikkaduwa strip, from Narigama to Wewala, and drops you at the door in Mirissa.

Journey details
The natural road is the A2, the Galle Road, which stays close to the sea almost the whole way. From Hikkaduwa it runs south through Dodanduwa and Rathgama, past the lagoon and the small fishing villages, and reaches Galle after about 18 km. The driver skirts the walls of Galle Fort and the busy bus stand, then follows the coast east through Unawatuna, Habaraduwa, Koggala and Ahangama, where the stilt fishermen perch on their poles in the shallows, then Midigama and the wide curve of Weligama bay. Mirissa comes a few minutes after Weligama, just over the hill. Without stops it takes about 1 hour 5 minutes. On a bad traffic day, usually a weekday afternoon in Galle, the driver may take the Southern Expressway inland for part of the way instead; the price does not change. If your accommodation is up one of the lanes behind Mirissa beach or on the road to Secret Beach, send the exact name so the driver can go straight there.
The road
This is a coast road, not a motorway, and it behaves like one long village. The A2 is two lanes, lined with shops, hotels and bus stops, and the private buses that run between Colombo and Matara drive it fast and stop without warning. Galle is the only real bottleneck: the junction by the bus stand and the railway station backs up at school times and on weekday afternoons. Between Unawatuna and Koggala the road runs right beside the beach in places, with the railway line between you and the sand. Watch for scooters with surfboards on side racks around Ahangama, Midigama and Weligama, and for tuk-tuks turning off without signalling. In Mirissa itself, the main road through the village is narrow and parking outside the beachfront guesthouses is tight, so the driver may stop on the main road and walk your bags down the lane.
Recommended vehicle for this route
On a run this short, the economy sedan is enough for up to three people with three bags, and it is the lowest price on this page. If you have surfboards, mention them when you book: a board bag fits more easily in a van, and the Comfort van (6 seats) is the safe choice for two people with boards, or for a family with cases. The comfort sedan suits a couple with two large suitcases who want more boot space and legroom. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free if you ask when you book, and the driver loads and unloads your luggage, which matters more than it sounds in the midday heat on the coast.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
This is one of the few routes in Sri Lanka where public transport is genuinely easy. The coastal railway runs from Hikkaduwa to Galle, Weligama and Matara, with Weligama a short tuk-tuk ride from Mirissa; the line runs beside the sea for long stretches and the ride is lovely, but trains are infrequent, often crowded, and big cases are a struggle. Buses on the Galle Road pass every few minutes and are very cheap, though you will likely change in Galle and stand with your bags. A tuk-tuk for the whole 55 km is possible but slow and hot. PickMe works locally but drivers sometimes turn down trips outside their area. The taxi is the only option that goes from one door to the other with no change and with your luggage safe in the boot.
Best time to travel this route
The south and west coast season runs from about November to April, when the sea at Mirissa is calm and the whale-watching boats go out, so that is when most people make this move. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough sea, red flags on many beaches and frequent showers, though the road stays open and the trip is just as quick. Late morning is the easiest time to drive: check out of your Hikkaduwa hotel, pass through Galle after the morning school rush and before the afternoon one, and arrive in Mirissa for lunch and check-in. Avoid crossing Galle between about 07:00 and 08:30 and again from about 13:30 when the schools let out. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% night surcharge, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How long does it take from Hikkaduwa to Mirissa?
It is 55 km and about 1 hour 5 minutes without stops. Allow a little more if you cross Galle at school time.
Can we stop at Galle Fort on the way?
Yes. Galle is right on the road, about a third of the way, and an hour or two inside the fort walls is the most popular stop on this trip. Your bags stay locked in the car. Tell us when you book or on WhatsApp so the time is planned in.
Can we see the stilt fishermen?
Yes, they are beside the road between Koggala and Ahangama, and the driver can pull over. Be aware that some of the men on the poles today pose for photographs and expect a tip.
We have surfboards. Is that a problem?
Not at all, but tell us when you book. Boards travel best in a van, and the driver will make sure they are packed so they do not slide around.
Is the train a good alternative?
For a light traveller with time, yes: the coast line from Hikkaduwa to Weligama is scenic and cheap. With large bags, a family or a fixed check-in time, the taxi is simpler.
How do we pay?
You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to pay the driver. On the last screen you can choose 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver instead, which costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge.
