Taxi from Ella to Mirissa, fixed price private transfer

The A23 drops from Ella to Wellawaya in about an hour of continuous descent, then the A2 runs south-west across the dry plains through Tissamaharama and Tangalle to the coast. One hundred and sixty-five kilometres, four hours, and almost all of the difficulty is in the first twenty-five. Most people break the journey. Buduruwagala near Wellawaya adds forty-five minutes, and the coast road east of Matara has half a dozen places worth stopping for a coconut.

The descent from Ella is the same set of hairpins that make the airport transfer notorious, taken downhill: easier on the stomach, harder on the brakes. Once past Wellawaya the road is flat, straight and hot, and the character of the drive changes completely, this is dry-zone country, with paddy, buffalo and long open stretches. Two things to watch. The A2 between Tissamaharama and Tangalle passes several national park boundaries and elephants do cross, particularly at dawn and dusk. And from Matara westwards the A2 becomes a busy coastal road through continuous ribbon development, so the final twenty kilometres are much slower than the eighty that preceded them.

The comfort van is our recommendation for this route for four or more, and the reasoning is about the whole day rather than the road: you are moving hotels with all your luggage, the second half is hot, and a van gives you room to spread out and better airflow than a packed sedan. For two people the comfort sedan is right. The descent from Ella is a genuinely poor fit for a long wheelbase, and the lanes at the Mirissa end are worse, so nothing longer than the van goes down there.

There is no direct train and no direct bus. The rail line from Ella runs north-west into the hills, exactly the wrong direction, and reaching the south coast by public transport means a bus to Matara with at least one change, taking most of a day. This is one of the routes where a private transfer is the only practical option, which is precisely why the aggregators price it high.

Leave Ella by 09:00 and you arrive in Mirissa in time for a swim before sunset. Later departures mean crossing the plains in the hottest part of the afternoon and arriving in the dark on lanes that are hard to find. The dry season on the south coast runs December to April; the hills above Wellawaya are wettest from October to December, which occasionally slows the descent. Between May and September the Ella end is often clear while Mirissa gets afternoon rain, the reverse of what most people expect.
