Hikkaduwa to Ella is the longest of the beach-to-hills transfers from the south-west coast: 215 km and about 5 hours 10 minutes of driving, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle. Hikkaduwa lies north of Galle, so before you even turn east you have the full run of the Southern Expressway ahead, and after it the dry plains and the climb into the Uva hills. It is a proper travel day, but an easy one to organise: one car from the door of your beach hotel to the door of your Ella guesthouse, bags in the boot, and a driver who can turn the lunch break into something worth stopping for. Many people on a first trip land at the airport, go straight to Hikkaduwa for a few days of reef and turtles, and then use this transfer to start the hill country from the south.

Journey details

The driver picks you up along the Galle Road, wherever your hotel is between the north end of the strip and Narigama or Thiranagama to the south, and drives inland through cinnamon and rubber country to join the Southern Expressway at Baddegama. From there it is motorway for well over half the distance, east past Galle, Matara and the exits for the southern beaches, until the road reaches the dry country of the Hambantota district. Leaving the expressway at its eastern end, the driver follows the A2 north past the Wirawila tank. Just east of here lies Tissamaharama, the gateway to Yala, with its large ancient reservoir and white dagoba, the natural place for lunch if you want a proper break in a long day. The route then continues through Thanamalwila to Wellawaya and climbs the A23 through the Ella Gap, past Ravana Falls. Allow about 5 hours 10 minutes without stops, and around seven hours with lunch by the lake at Tissamaharama.

The road

The morning starts on the Galle Road, the main coast road, which is slow through Hikkaduwa because buses stop wherever passengers wait and the verges are lined with shops and hotels. Heading inland to Baddegama avoids the worst of it and the congestion of Galle town. On the expressway the driver keeps to the limit, and on a day this long a mid-morning stop at a service area for coffee and a stretch is part of the plan, not a favour. Off the motorway, the A2 crosses scrub and paddy where farm tractors and cattle share the road, and elephants from the surrounding reserves sometimes cross after dark, one more reason to finish in daylight. From Wellawaya the A23 is the hardest driving of the day: steep, narrow and full of tight bends, with buses descending at speed and little room to pass. Your driver will not rush it, even if lunch ran long.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Over five hours of driving changes the calculation. The economy sedan is the lowest price on this page and suits one or two people with light bags, but for a couple with full luggage, or anyone with a dive bag and snorkelling gear from Hikkaduwa, the comfort sedan is worth it: room for four bags, more legroom and a quieter ride on the motorway. From four passengers, take the Comfort van (6 seats) rather than squeezing a fourth person into the middle of a sedan for a whole day; everyone gets a window and the bags stay out of the cabin. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. At Tissamaharama or anywhere else you stop, your luggage stays locked in the car. Child seats are free on request, and the air conditioning makes the midday stretch across the plains far more pleasant.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

Hikkaduwa has a station on the coastal railway, but the line runs north to Colombo, not inland. Getting to Ella by train means riding to Colombo, staying the night, and taking the hill-country line through Kandy the next day, which suits people who want the famous train ride more than people who want to arrive. By bus you would change at least twice, in Galle or Matara and again at Wellawaya or Tissamaharama. A better way to break the trip, if you have time, is to make Tissamaharama a stop rather than a lunch: Hikkaduwa to Tissamaharama one day, a jeep safari in Yala at dawn, and Tissamaharama to Ella the next afternoon. We price each leg separately, and car hire with driver by the day also works well for this kind of plan.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Hikkaduwa around 07:00. With the longest drive of any south-coast beach to Ella, an early start keeps a lunch stop possible and still gets you up the Ella Gap by mid-afternoon, before the light starts to fade. A 06:00 pickup is fine too; anything before 05:00 falls in the night window and adds 15%. Hikkaduwa's season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calm and the reef is clear. From May to September the south-west monsoon makes the sea rough and brings rain to the coast, while Ella is often drier then. The hills get their heaviest rain from about October to January, when the climb can be slow after a storm. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

Yes, it is only a short detour from the route. Tell us when you book or on WhatsApp and the stop is added to your quote. If you want a Yala safari, book Hikkaduwa to Tissamaharama and Tissamaharama to Ella as two transfers instead.

Our hotel is south of Hikkaduwa town. Is that a problem?
