Hiriketiya taxi & cab service at fixed prices
Taxi from Hiriketiya from $35 (Rs 11,000) per vehicle, not per person
Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe bay on the south coast, about 1.5 km from the centre of Dickwella, where a strip of sand curls round a cove you can walk across in a few minutes. Not long ago it was a quiet fishing inlet; today it is one of the most popular surf spots in Sri Lanka, with a gentle beach break on the sand that suits beginners, a reef break for those who know what they are doing, and cafés, smoothie bars and wooden guesthouses climbing the slope behind the palms. The mood is relaxed and a little bohemian, and many people stay far longer than they planned. Our taxi service gets you there and away again at a fixed price for the whole vehicle: an economy or comfort sedan, a six-seat or an eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, expressway tolls and parking included. You pay the full price online by card when you book and there is nothing to pay the driver; if you prefer, pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Colombo Airport to Hiriketiya is 190 km, about 3 h 10, from $105 (Rs 33,000).

Things to do by taxi around Hiriketiya
Half-day and day trips from Hiriketiya that travellers book again and again, with the drive time and the fixed price per car. Swipe through, pick one, and book the ride.
Prices are per vehicle and fixed before you book. For several stops in one day with the car waiting for you, a driver for the day is usually simpler.
Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Hiriketiya?
For the short hop between the bay and Dickwella, a tuk-tuk is the obvious choice: drivers wait at the top of the bay road and in town, and you agree the fare before you get in. PickMe and Uber are patchy this far along the coast, so do not count on an app car turning up quickly, least of all at dawn. Buses run often along the A2 between Matara and Tangalle and stop in Dickwella; with a daypack they are fine, with a surfboard or suitcases they are hard work. The coastal railway now continues a little beyond Matara to Beliatta, but trains on that last stretch are few and the ride to Colombo takes most of a day, so most rail travellers use Matara station. For the airport, Yala, Mattala or a move along the coast with luggage and boards, a booked cab at a price agreed in advance is the straightforward way.

Where we pick up in Hiriketiya
We collect from any guesthouse, villa or surf camp in Hiriketiya, from the beachfront cafés to the houses up the jungle lanes behind the bay, and from Dickwella town, the beach hotels west of it and the stretch of the A2 towards Tangalle. Several properties above the bay sit at the top of very steep concrete lanes that a loaded van cannot climb: tell us the name of the place when you book and we confirm whether the car comes to the door or meets you at the bottom of the lane, where the driver helps with the bags. Surfboards are welcome; mention them, with their length, so we send a vehicle with room for them inside. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, and the driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp the day before. For an early flight from Colombo, most guests leave the bay well before dawn, so agree the pickup time with us and set an alarm.
Getting to and from Hiriketiya
There is one way into the bay: a narrow, steep road that drops from the A2 just east of Dickwella and ends in a short loop behind the beach. Parking at the bottom is a handful of spaces, and in season the loop is busy with tuk-tuks, scooters and surfers carrying boards, so drivers stop where they can and walk the last few metres with you. Along the coast, the A2 heads west through Dickwella to Talalla, 15 km and about 20 min, then Matara, 25 km, and Mirissa, 30 km, about 40 min; Madiha, the reef beach just past Matara, is 30 km. East, Tangalle is 15 km, about 20 min, and the road carries on towards Hambantota. Inland, the Southern Expressway (E01) has been extended past Matara to Beliatta and beyond: that is the road to Colombo Airport, 190 km and about 3 h 10, and to Mattala airport, 65 km and about 1 h 15. Tissamaharama, the base for Yala, is 85 km, about 1 h 35.
Travel tips for Hiriketiya
The main surf and beach season on this coast runs from about November to April, when the south-west monsoon is over and the sea is clean. December to March is the busiest stretch: the line-up gets crowded and the best guesthouses fill weeks or months ahead, so book your bed first and your transfer once you have the dates. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rougher seas to most of the coast; Hiriketiya is more sheltered than many bays and still sees surfers, but it is quieter and some cafés take a break. Beginners should stay on the sand side, away from the reef, which is shallow and sharp at low tide. Dickwella town has the ATMs, pharmacy and market that the bay lacks. For a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 a 15% night surcharge applies, shown before you pay, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off. If you want several stops in a day, say the blowhole, Mulkirigala and Tangalle, a car with driver for the day, on our private driver page, is usually simpler than separate transfers.
About Hiriketiya
The bay itself is the reason to come. Early morning is the best of it: glassy water, the first lessons on the sand side, the regulars out on the reef, and fishermen still pulling boats up at the eastern end. In the late afternoon people gather on the rocks and at the cafés to watch the last sets in the low sun. If you do not surf, the sheltered corner is good for a swim on calm days and the beach is good for doing nothing.
Within a short ride, Dickwella has a wider, quieter beach of its own and Wewurukannala Vihara, a temple with one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the country. East towards Tangalle, the Hummanaya blowhole at Kudawella sends spray high into the air when the swell is running; it is unimpressive on flat days, so ask locally first. Further on, Rekawa beach is known for nesting sea turtles and night watching with the local conservation project, and inland from Tangalle the Mulkirigala rock temple climbs a crag in a series of cave shrines. Yala National Park, through Tissamaharama, is an easy day out or a good next stop.

How much is a taxi from Hiriketiya back to the airport?
From $105 (Rs 33,000) per vehicle, or $140 (Rs 43,500) for a six-seat van with room for boards. Allow about 3 h 10 plus a margin, and leave early for morning flights; a night pickup before 05:00 carries the 15% surcharge.
Is Hiriketiya part of Dickwella?
It belongs to the Dickwella area: the bay is about 1.5 km from the town centre, down a steep side road off the A2. We pick up in both, and in Dickwella you will find the banks and shops the bay does not have.
How much is a cab from Hiriketiya to Tangalle or Talalla?
Tangalle is 15 km, about 20 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000). Talalla, the next quiet bay west, is 15 km, about 20 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000). Both are short enough for a day trip with the return booked separately.
How much is a taxi from Hiriketiya to Mirissa?
From $35 (Rs 11,000) for the car. Mirissa is 30 km west along the A2 through Dickwella and Matara, about 40 min. Matara on its own is 25 km, from $35 (Rs 11,000).
Can you take us from Hiriketiya to Yala or Mattala airport?
Yes. Tissamaharama, where most Yala safaris start, is 85 km, about 1 h 35, from $47 (Rs 15,000). Mattala airport is 65 km, about 1 h 15, from $36 (Rs 11,500). We do not sell safaris; the driver drops you at your hotel or the jeep pickup.
Can we bring surfboards in the taxi?
Yes. Tell us how many boards and how long they are when you book. Short boards fit in most cars; for long boards or several boards, a van is the safer choice, and we send the right vehicle.
How do we pay, and can we cancel?
You pay the full price by card when you book, and nothing is due to the driver. You can also pay 50% online and the rest in cash on the day; that option costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
