A taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Hiriketiya covers 190 km in about 3 hours 10 minutes, almost all of it on expressway, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle, tolls included. Hiriketiya is a small horseshoe bay just past Dickwella on the far south coast, known for its gentle surf, its palm-fringed beach and a handful of cafés and guesthouses tucked into the jungle above the sand. It is a long way from the airport, and after a long-haul flight the last thing you want is to change buses in Colombo and Matara. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you to the door of your guesthouse.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start
The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Hiriketiya. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Hiriketiya, the price stays the same.

Journey details
From the airport at Katunayake the driver takes the Katunayake Expressway towards Colombo, then turns onto the Outer Circular Expressway round the east of the city to join the Southern Expressway near Kottawa. From there it is a fast, fenced motorway south, inland of Bentota, Galle and Weligama, all the way to the Matara end. Depending on traffic and the time of day, the driver either leaves the expressway near Matara and follows the A2 coast road east through Dondra, past the lighthouse at the southern tip of the island, to Dickwella, or stays on the extension a little longer and comes down to the coast from inland. Hiriketiya itself is reached by a short, narrow lane off the main road just beyond Dickwella. Without stops, the trip takes about 3 hours 10 minutes. Send the exact name of your accommodation when you book, as several places are up steep tracks above the bay.
The road
The expressway section is the easy part: no tuk-tuks, no junctions, a 100 km/h limit and service areas with toilets and coffee, which are welcome after a night flight. The Katunayake Expressway can be slow at the Colombo end in the morning rush, but the Outer Circular takes you round the city without entering it. The real driving starts when you leave the motorway. The A2 east of Matara is a busy two-lane coast road, with buses, fish lorries, scooters and dogs asleep on the verge, and Dickwella has a crowded little town centre. The lane down to Hiriketiya bay is narrow, steep in places and sometimes blocked by parked scooters at the beach end, so on a busy day the driver may stop at the top and walk your bags down.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For a couple with two suitcases, the economy sedan is enough and is the lowest price on this page; it takes up to three passengers and three bags. Surfers should tell us about board bags when booking: boards travel much more easily in the Comfort van (6 seats), which is also the right choice for families and anyone with a lot of luggage. The comfort sedan suits two to four people who want more room to stretch out after a long flight. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. On the narrowest lanes above the bay a sedan gets closer to the door than a van, so mention it if your guesthouse is up a steep track. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no direct public transport from the airport to Hiriketiya. The cheapest route is a bus or taxi into Colombo, the coastal train or a highway bus south to Matara, then a local bus or tuk-tuk on to Dickwella and Hiriketiya. With luggage and jet lag, that easily turns into most of a day. Express buses on the Southern Expressway are quicker but still leave from Colombo, not the airport, and drop you at Matara. PickMe and Uber can sometimes be booked from the airport, but drivers may not want a long one-way trip to the far south. A private transfer is the only option that goes straight from the arrivals hall to the bay, at any hour your flight lands.
Best time to travel this route
Hiriketiya’s season matches the rest of the south coast, from about November to April, when the sea is calm, the surf suits beginners and intermediates, and the bay is at its liveliest. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rougher sea and frequent showers, though some surfers still come for the quieter bay. Your flight decides the timing. The driver tracks your flight and waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no charge, so delays are not a problem. Many long-haul flights land at night or very early in the morning; a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% night surcharge, and the empty expressway at that hour makes the trip quick. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How long does it take from the airport to Hiriketiya?
About 3 hours 10 minutes for the 190 km, without stops. Allow a little more if you land in the Colombo morning rush.
Where will the driver meet us?
In the arrivals hall after customs, holding a sign with your name. He follows your flight, so if you are delayed he waits, and the first 60 minutes after landing are free.
We have surfboards. Can you take them?
Yes. Tell us how many boards and their length when you book. We usually recommend a van for board bags so they travel flat and safely.
Can we stop on the way for food or a SIM card?
Yes. You can buy a SIM card and change money in the arrivals hall before you leave, and the expressway service areas have food and toilets. Other stops are possible; ask when you book or on WhatsApp.
