We meet you inside the arrivals hall, past customs, with a board showing your name. Airport pickups include sixty minutes of free waiting measured from the moment the aircraft reaches its stand, which covers immigration, baggage and the walk out in almost every case. If you are delayed beyond that, a lost bag, a long immigration queue, your driver stays and waits; we would rather explain a delay than leave you standing. For departures we recommend arriving three hours before an international flight, and we build a thirty-minute buffer into every airport-bound transfer as standard.

The airport is on the E03 expressway, which is why Negombo is twenty minutes away and Colombo forty-five. Everything else radiates from there: the E01 south to Galle and the coast, the A6 north-east to the cultural triangle, and the A1 east to Kandy. There is no rail link to the terminal. The airport bus goes to Colombo Fort and is inexpensive but impractical with checked luggage. Ride-hailing apps operate here and work well for short hops; they are considerably less reliable for long-distance bookings, which is the single most common complaint we hear from arriving visitors.

Three things worth knowing. First, buy your SIM card in the arrivals hall, the counters are past baggage claim and the price is fair; it is much more awkward to do later. Second, the duty-free electronics shops in arrivals are a genuine Sri Lankan oddity and not a scam, but you do not need a rice cooker. Third, if you are landing at 03:00 and heading somewhere five hours away, consider a night in Negombo instead: twenty minutes from the terminal, and you start the real journey rested and in daylight.
