Taxi from Kandy to Ella, fixed price private transfer

The A5 climbs from Kandy at 500 m to Nuwara Eliya at 1,900 m over about 80 km, then drops to Ella at 1,040 m. The gradient is relentless rather than steep, and the average speed for the whole journey is barely 35 km/h. Expect four hours of driving with no stops, five with a tea factory visit and a proper look at Ramboda Falls. Most people take the stops, this is one of the few transfers where the journey is genuinely worth more than the destination, and where arriving an hour later costs you nothing.

The A5 between Pussellawa and Nuwara Eliya is a continuous sequence of bends with tea bushes on both sides and very little barrier. It is well surfaced and not dangerous, but it is slow, and it is where the afternoon cloud sits. From about 14:00, particularly between June and September, the top of the climb is regularly in thick mist with 30 m of visibility, the views you came for simply are not there, and the driving is slower. Below Nuwara Eliya the road to Ella passes through Welimada and is gentler. One local detail worth knowing: the last few kilometres into Ella village are congested most afternoons, and the parking situation near the main street is genuinely poor, so drop-offs at guesthouses on the Passara road can involve a short walk.

This is the route where the high-roof HiAce earns its price. Four hours of continuous cornering is tiring in a small car, and the van gives every passenger a window and a flat floor, which matters, because on the A5 the person in the middle seat of a sedan will be miserable by Pussellawa. If there are only two of you, the comfort sedan is the better choice than the economy: it is more softly sprung, and on a road made entirely of bends the suspension is what you notice. We would avoid the minibus. It is slow on the climb and the tight bends above Ramboda take it two attempts in places.

The Kandy-to-Ella train is the famous one, seven hours, blue carriages, open doors, and rightly on every list. If you are travelling light and have the day, take it instead of a car; we will happily drive you to Kandy station and pick you up at Ella. Where the train fails is luggage and timing: reserved seats sell out weeks ahead in season, unreserved carriages are standing-room only, and the journey ends at Ella station with a walk into the village. Many travellers do both, train one way, car the other, which is the answer we usually give.

Leave Kandy by 09:00. The mountain is clear in the morning and clouds over in the afternoon, so an early start buys you the views and the photographs. December to March gives the most reliable visibility. From June to September the south-west monsoon sits on this side of the hills and the top of the climb can be wet and grey for days at a time, the road stays open and safe, but manage your expectations about the scenery. Nuwara Eliya in April is packed for the New Year season and the town centre can add half an hour.
