Taxi from Colombo Airport to Ella, fixed price private transfer

The drive splits cleanly in two. The first 150 km run on the E03 and E01 expressways at a steady 100 km/h, past Colombo and down to the southern plains, roughly two hours, and genuinely dull. The remaining 100 km climb from sea level to 1,040 m on the A2 and then the A23, and take just as long. Total driving time is around five and a half hours without stops; budget six with a lunch break, which most drivers will suggest at Wellawaya. Arriving before dark matters here: the last stretch has no street lighting and the hairpins are unforgiving at night.

The A23 above Wellawaya is where this transfer earns its reputation. It gains 900 m in about 25 km through a series of tight switchbacks cut into the hillside, with a rock face on one side and a drop on the other. The surface is decent tarmac and the road is fully paved, but it is narrow, and buses take the racing line through the corners. After heavy rain, most likely between October and December, small landslips are common on this section and can add 45 minutes while a lane is cleared. If you are prone to motion sickness, this is the part to prepare for: take something an hour before Wellawaya, not when you start feeling it. Drivers who know the road stop at Ravana Falls not only because it is pretty, but because it comes exactly when passengers need to stand up.

For two people with two suitcases, the economy sedan is genuinely fine on this route, the expressway section is smooth and the car is small enough for the switchbacks. For four adults, we recommend the high-roof HiAce rather than the SUV, and the reason is specific to the A23: the van has a longer wheelbase and a lower centre of load once the bags are in the back, so it pitches less through the hairpins than a short SUV with a roof-height load. Passengers in the middle row also get a flat floor and a window each, which matters on a five-and-a-half-hour drive. The minibus is the wrong choice here, it is slow on the climb and awkward on the narrow lanes around Ella itself, several of which end in a three-point turn.

The train from Colombo Fort to Ella is one of the best rail journeys in Asia and costs a fraction of a taxi, but it does not start at the airport, takes seven to nine hours from Kandy or Nanu Oya, and reserved seats sell out weeks ahead in season. With two large suitcases it is genuinely difficult. Intercity buses run to Bandarawela and require a change, plus a tuk-tuk for the last 10 km. Our honest recommendation: take the private transfer on arrival, when you are tired and carrying everything you own, then do the Ella-to-Kandy leg by train later in your trip, unencumbered, as the experience it deserves to be.

Leave the airport before 14:00 if you can. The transfer takes five and a half hours, and the light goes at about 18:15 year-round; the A23 climb is a different proposition in the dark. If your flight lands at 03:00, as many European arrivals do, the drive is actually easier: the expressway is empty and you reach the mountains at first light, though a night surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00. Avoid the second half of the north-east monsoon, roughly November into early December, when the Wellawaya climb sees the most rain and the most delays. January to March is the cleanest run of the year.
