Prices checked on 5 October 2026.

A taxi from Kandy to Trincomalee covers about 190 km in about 4 hours 10 minutes, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, from the hill capital to the deep natural harbour on the north-east coast. It is the obvious way to add the east to a classic loop, especially between May and September, when the west and south coasts have the monsoon and Trincomalee has calm sea and sunshine. The route runs through the cultural triangle, so Dambulla’s cave temple or a lunch stop at Habarana fit easily into the day.

Journey details

From Kandy the driver takes the A9 north through Katugastota, Akurana, Matale and Naula to Dambulla. At Dambulla the route turns onto the A6, through Habarana and then north-east across the dry zone past Kantale, where the road runs beside the large Kantale reservoir, to Trincomalee. The town sits on a peninsula, with Fort Frederick and the Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock at its tip. Hotels in Trincomalee and just north at Uppuveli are reached in a few minutes from the town centre. If you are staying further north in Nilaveli, give us the exact hotel name: Nilaveli is a separate destination on this site. Without stops, allow about 4 hours 10 minutes; with the Dambulla caves and lunch, plan on about six.

The road

The slow part is leaving Kandy, with the lake loop, Katugastota bridge and the long shopping street of Akurana. After Matale the A9 is a fast trunk road, and the Dambulla junction is the next bottleneck. Beyond Habarana the A6 crosses open, thinly populated country with long straight sections, patches of forest and reservoirs. This is elephant country: wild elephants regularly cross the A6 between Habarana and Kantale, especially at dusk, and drivers slow down and keep their distance. Fuel stations and good places to eat are sparse after Habarana, so lunch is best taken there. The approach to Trincomalee is easy, though the town centre is busy around the bus station and market.

Recommended vehicle for this route

The economy sedan suits up to three passengers with three bags, and on the long, straight roads after Dambulla it is perfectly comfortable. Couples with large cases will prefer the comfort sedan for its bigger boot and extra legroom. Families of four or more should take the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. If you plan to snorkel or dive at Pigeon Island or Nilaveli, gear bags take more room than they look, so count them as luggage. Child seats are free on request, and the air conditioning is welcome: the east is much hotter than Kandy, often by eight degrees or more.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no practical train from Kandy to Trincomalee. The Trincomalee line branches off the northern line and connects mainly with Colombo; from Kandy you would need to change and wait, and the trip would take most of a day. Direct buses from Kandy to Trincomalee exist and are cheap, but slow, crowded and often hot, with luggage stowed wherever there is room. A popular alternative is to stop for a night in Sigiriya or Habarana and do the cultural triangle on the way, which turns the trip into two short drives. For the direct transfer, the taxi is the clear choice.

Best time to travel this route

The east coast season runs from about April or May to September, with calm sea and sunshine, and that is when most people make this trip. From about November to January the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain to Trincomalee, and some low roads in the region can flood after storms. Leave Kandy around 07:00 to beat the city traffic and you arrive by early afternoon, before the light starts to fade over elephant country. Avoid the A6 after dark if you can; any pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds the 15% night surcharge. Travel between 15 December and 15 January carries the 10% high-season rate, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How long does it take from Kandy to Trincomalee?

About 4 hours 10 minutes for 190 km without stops. With the Dambulla cave temple and lunch, around six hours.

Which route does the driver take?

The A9 from Kandy to Dambulla, then the A6 via Habarana and Kantale to Trincomalee. It is the standard route and the quickest.

Can we stop at Dambulla or Sigiriya on the way?

Dambulla’s cave temple is right on the route and an easy stop. Sigiriya is a detour from the A6 and needs about three hours to climb. Each stop is added to the quote as a fixed amount per stop.

Our hotel is in Nilaveli. Can we use this page?

Nilaveli is a separate destination, about half an hour north of Trincomalee. Book it directly, or send us the hotel name on WhatsApp and we will advise.

Is the road safe at night?

It is safe with a careful driver, but elephants cross the A6 after dark, so it is slow. We recommend arriving before dusk.

How do we pay?

The full price is paid online by card when you book, and nothing is paid to the driver. On the last screen you can choose to pay 50% online and the balance in cash to the driver, but the trip then costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and we confirm on WhatsApp.
