A taxi from Kandy to Weligama is 215 km and about 4 hours 40 minutes, from the old royal city in the hills to the wide, gentle bay where much of Sri Lanka learns to surf, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, with expressway tolls included. Weligama has changed quickly: alongside the fishing town there are now surf camps, yoga retreats and villas spread through the villages inland of the bay, so where exactly you are going matters more than the town name. The driver knows the area and takes you to the door, whether that is a beachfront hotel or a camp up a lane among the coconut palms.

Journey details
Leaving Kandy, the car follows the A1 west through Peradeniya, down the Kadugannawa pass and through Kegalle towards Colombo. Near the capital it joins the expressways, usually the Outer Circular Expressway round the east of the city and then the Southern Expressway south; when a Central Expressway section helps on the day, the driver uses it. The Southern Expressway runs inland past Galle, and you leave it at the interchange serving Weligama, then drive down through the countryside to the A2 and the bay. Allow about 4 hours 40 minutes for the 215 km without stops. Weligama sits between Ahangama and Mirissa, so hotels described as being in Kapparatota, Pelena or on the headland towards Mirissa are all reached the same way, with a few minutes more at the end.
The road
The mountain stretch comes first and lasts less than an hour: the Kadugannawa descent and then the busy A1 towns of Mawanella and Kegalle, where buses stop on the road and lorries hold up the climbs. Expect the A1 to take a large share of the total time. The expressway is quick and calm, with service areas for coffee and toilets, and the driver will suggest a break at the halfway point. The last section is on smaller roads: the link from the interchange down to the coast winds through villages, and the A2 along Weligama bay is busy with buses, tuk-tuks and surfers carrying boards across the road. Some surf camps and villas are on unpaved lanes inland of the main road without a clear address, so send the property name and a WhatsApp location pin when you book.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For up to three people with three bags, the economy sedan is fine on this road. A couple with big suitcases will be more comfortable in the comfort sedan, which takes four bags and rides more smoothly on the A1. Families should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Many people heading to Weligama arrive with a surfboard, or plan to buy one there; boards do not fit in every car, so mention yours when you book and we will send a vehicle with room for it. Lessons and board hire are easy to arrange locally, so there is no need to carry rental gear from Kandy. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
Weligama has a station on the coastal railway, close to the bay, so the train is possible: Kandy to Colombo Fort, around three hours, then a coast line train south past Galle. It is a long day, the connection in Colombo is not coordinated, and space for large luggage is limited, but the coastal section is one of the loveliest rides on the island. Buses mean at least one change in Colombo. For a solo traveller with a backpack and no fixed arrival time, the train is worth considering. For a family, a couple with suitcases or anyone with a board, the taxi saves several hours and drops you at your door.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Kandy around 07:00 to clear the A1 before the traffic builds; you reach Weligama in the early afternoon, in time for an evening session on the beginner waves of the bay. A later start means facing the roads around Colombo in the afternoon rush. The south coast season runs from about November to April, with calm sea, steady small waves for lessons and dry weather. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings showers and stronger swell; the bay stays more sheltered than the open coast, but many visitors move to the east coast then. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies, and a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
