Koggala lies on the south coast between Habaraduwa, just past Unawatuna, and Ahangama. Here the A2 runs on a long, straight stretch with a wide beach on one side and, on the other, Koggala Lake, a broad lagoon scattered with small islands and fringed with mangroves. It is a different kind of stop from the surf villages around it: big beach hotels set back behind the sand, stilt fishermen perched on their poles in the shallows, boat trips to the cinnamon and temple islands, and an old airstrip from the Second World War that the road skirts on its way through. Our taxi service moves you to and from Koggala at a fixed price for the whole vehicle: an economy or comfort sedan, a six-seat or an eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, expressway tolls and parking included. You book and pay the full price online by card, so there is nothing to pay the driver on the day; you can also pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Koggala to Galle is 20 km, about 25 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000); Koggala to Colombo Airport is 160 km, about 2 h 45, from $90 (Rs 28,000).

Koggala

Koggala Lake islands by boat

Allow 2 h

Koggala Lake begins just behind the beach hotels: a broad lagoon of small islands, mangroves and birdlife. A boat tour from the jetties on the coast road visits the cinnamon island, where a family shows how the quills are rolled, and the temple island. Staying in Koggala, ask your driver to drop you at a jetty at dawn, when the water is flat and kingfishers are hunting, and settle the length of the tour before you board.

Best time : Sunrise, dry months

Koggala

Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum

Allow 1 h

The novelist Martin Wickramasinghe was born in Koggala, and his family home is now a museum of village life: farming tools, masks, puppets, carts and his own rooms, set in a shady garden near the beach. It is a calm outing from a Koggala hotel on a hot or rainy afternoon. Pair it with a boat on the lake, since one of its islands is said to have inspired his novel Madol Doova.

Best time : Afternoon, good on rainy days

Stilt fishermen of Koggala

Allow 45 min

Between Koggala and Ahangama, men perch on poles planted in the reef, the image on half the postcards of Sri Lanka. Today it is mainly a paid photo set-up rather than a working fishery, and the fee is agreed before you raise the camera, not after. From a Koggala hotel it is only a few minutes along the coast road; ask your driver to stop at sunset, when the light is warm, and to wait while you take pictures.

Kataluwa Purvarama Temple murals

≈ 10 min by carAllow 1 h

In the lanes inland from Koggala, the Purvarama temple at Kataluwa is known for its old wall paintings in the southern style, with scenes from the lives of the Buddha and figures said to be Europeans in colonial dress. The lanes are narrow and poorly signed, so a driver who knows the way saves a lot of searching. Cover shoulders and knees, keep voices low and leave a small donation for the upkeep.

Galle Fort afternoon and sunset

25 min by car · 20 kmAllow 4 h

Galle Fort lies west of Koggala along the coast, past Habaraduwa and Unawatuna. Spend the afternoon in the lanes, the old Dutch church and the Maritime Museum, then walk the ramparts at sunset. A taxi from your Koggala hotel drops you at the gate, since cars can hardly move inside the walls, and brings you home after dark on the A2, a busy road where walking or waving down a ride at night is no fun.

Koggala

Whale watching in Mirissa

25 min by car · 20 kmAllow 5 h

From Koggala, Mirissa harbour is a short drive east past Ahangama and Weligama, which makes Koggala one of the easiest bases for an early whale watching cruise. Your driver collects you from the hotel before sunrise, waits or comes back at the end of the trip, and can add a swim on Mirissa beach or a coffee in Weligama on the way home. Eat a light breakfast and sit at the back of the boat if the swell is big.

Sinharaja rainforest day trip

1 h 55 by car · 75 kmAllow 5 h

Sinharaja, the UNESCO-listed rainforest inland from the south coast, makes a full day out from Koggala: the roads climb away from the sea through rubber and tea smallholdings. Book a car for the whole day, start before dawn to reach the forest while the birds are most active, and walk with a local guide. Plan to be back on the coast by nightfall, because the inland lanes are dark, narrow and twisting.

Prices are per vehicle and fixed before you book. For several stops in one day with the car waiting for you, a driver for the day is usually simpler.

Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Koggala?

Koggala has its own station on the coastal railway between Colombo and Matara. Trains are slow and cheap, and fine for Galle or even Colombo if you travel light, but carriages fill up and there is little room for suitcases. Buses run constantly along the A2 and stop anywhere you flag them, which is useful for a hop to Ahangama or Unawatuna with a beach bag. Tuk-tuks are easy to find by the hotels and the lake jetties for short trips; agree the fare before you get in. PickMe works reasonably well around Galle but is less reliable out here, especially early in the morning. For the airport, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa or anything with luggage, a booked cab at a fixed price agreed in advance is the simplest option, and you know what you will pay before you leave the hotel.

Where we pick up in Koggala

We collect from every hotel along the Koggala beach, including the large resorts whose gates open straight onto the A2, and from the guesthouses and villas on the lake side, some of which sit down narrow lanes between the road and the water. Give us the property name rather than an address, and if you are staying beside the lake, the pin from your booking confirmation helps the driver find the right lane first time. We also pick up at the Martin Wickramasinghe museum, at the boat jetties on the lake and at Koggala station if you arrive by train. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, and the driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp the day before. If you are staying at the Habaraduwa or Ahangama end, send us the name so we can confirm which page and price applies.

Getting to and from Koggala

Everything in Koggala hangs off the A2, the coast road from Galle to Matara. Heading west, it passes the turtle hatcheries and beach guesthouses of Habaraduwa to reach Unawatuna, 10 km and about 15 min, then Galle, 20 km and about 25 min; Hikkaduwa is beyond Galle, 35 km and about 45 min. Heading east, the road runs into Ahangama after 5 km, then Midigama, 10 km, Weligama, 15 km and about 20 min, and Mirissa, 20 km and about 25 min. A few kilometres inland, the Southern Expressway (E01) has an interchange at Imaduwa, which is the quickest way north: Colombo Airport is 160 km, about 2 h 45, and Mattala airport, in the other direction, 110 km and about 1 h 55. For a day in the rainforest, Sinharaja is 75 km inland, about 1 h 55 on smaller roads through rubber and tea country.

Travel tips for Koggala

The sea along Koggala is at its calmest from about November to April, the best months for swimming and lazy beach days. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings big swell and strong currents to this open beach: respect the red flags and swim only where your hotel says it is safe, and even in the dry season check before going in, because parts of the shore have a strong pull. The lake, the museum and Galle are good plans on a grey day. Traffic on the A2 builds near Galle in the morning and late afternoon and around school hours, so allow extra time for a train or a lunch booking in the Fort. For a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 a 15% night surcharge applies, shown before you pay, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off. To string several sights together, the lake in the morning, Galle in the afternoon, a car with driver for the day, on our private driver page, is usually better value than separate transfers.

About Koggala

Koggala Lake is the first thing to do. Boats leave from small jetties along the road and spend an hour or two among the islands: one where a family peels and rolls cinnamon bark and shows you how the quills are made, one with a Buddhist temple, and channels through the mangroves where you see kingfishers, herons and monitor lizards. Go in the morning, before the heat and the wind; agree the price and the length of the trip at the jetty. The writer Martin Wickramasinghe was born in Koggala, and his family home is now a small museum of village life and folk culture, with a quiet garden; the island in his best-known novel is said to be one of those on the lake.

The stilt fishermen on the reef between Koggala and Ahangama are the image on half the postcards of Sri Lanka. Be clear about what you are watching: today it is mostly a paid photo set-up rather than a living fishery, and the fee is agreed before you lift the camera, not after. The airstrip by the road was a base for flying boats and aircraft during the Second World War and is still used by the air force. Galle Fort is close enough for an afternoon and a sunset walk on the ramparts.
