A taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Koggala is 160 km and about 2 hours 45 minutes by expressway, in a private car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle, tolls included. Koggala sits on the south coast between Unawatuna and Ahangama, on a narrow strip of land between a long beach and a wide lake dotted with small islands. It is a quieter base than the busier resorts nearby, with the stilt fishermen on their poles just along the shore, boat trips on the lake and Galle Fort about 20 minutes away. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your hotel or villa.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start

The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Koggala. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Koggala, the price stays the same.

You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.

Journey details

From the airport at Katunayake the driver follows the Katunayake Expressway south, turns onto the Outer Circular Expressway round the eastern edge of Colombo and joins the Southern Expressway near Kottawa. The motorway runs south through rubber estates and paddy fields, well inland of the coast, past the turnings for Kalutara and Bentota. Near Galle the driver leaves the expressway, either at Pinnaduwa or a little further on at Imaduwa, depending on where you are staying, and comes down to the A2 coast road. From Pinnaduwa the road passes the edge of Galle and runs east through Unawatuna and Habaraduwa to Koggala; from Imaduwa it reaches the coast nearer Koggala itself. Without stops, the trip takes about 2 hours 45 minutes. Hotels and villas are spread along the beach and around the lake shore, so send the exact name or a map pin when you book.

The road

Leaving the airport is usually quick, though the Katunayake Expressway can slow near Colombo during the morning and evening rush. The Outer Circular and Southern Expressway are fenced motorways with a 100 km/h limit, smooth surfaces and service areas, Welipenna being the usual stop for a coffee and a toilet break. The change comes at the exit: the roads down to the coast are narrow country lanes through villages, and the A2 between Galle and Koggala is a busy two-lane coast road with buses, tuk-tuks and scooters. The railway runs between the road and the beach for much of this stretch. In Koggala the road squeezes between the lake and the sea, and some villas on the lake side are down unpaved tracks that the driver takes slowly.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For two people with normal luggage, the economy sedan is fine and costs the least: it takes three passengers and three bags. The comfort sedan is worth the step up after a long flight if you want more space, and it takes four bags for up to four passengers. Families, groups and anyone with a lot of luggage should book the Comfort van (6 seats), or the 8-seat van for seven or eight people. If you are staying in a villa down a narrow track by the lake, mention it: a sedan sometimes gets closer to the door than a van. Child seats are free on request, and the driver helps with the bags at both ends.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no direct public transport from the airport to Koggala. The usual budget route is a bus into Colombo, then the coastal train south to Koggala station or a bus down the Galle Road, with at least one change and a lot of luggage handling after a long flight. The coastal train is lovely but slow and crowded at peak times. Highway buses run from Colombo to Galle and Matara, but you would still need a tuk-tuk at the end. A private transfer is the only way to go from the arrivals hall to your door in one go, whatever time your flight lands.

Best time to travel this route

The south coast season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calm, the beaches are at their best and the lake is good for boat trips. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough sea and frequent showers, but it is quieter and greener, and the transfer itself is no slower. Your arrival time is set by your flight: the driver tracks it and waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no charge. If you land at night, a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% night surcharge, but the empty expressway makes the trip fast. If you land in the morning, the Colombo end of the Katunayake Expressway may be slow for a short while. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
