A private taxi from Nuwara Eliya to Adam’s Peak covers about 70 km in about two hours fifteen minutes, at a fixed price per vehicle agreed before departure. The car takes you to Nallathanniya, also called Dalhousie, the village at the foot of the main path up Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), the sacred mountain climbed by Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian pilgrims alike. Most people climb at night to reach the summit for sunrise, during the pilgrimage season from December to May. That leaves two ways to plan the transfer: an afternoon drive and a night in Dalhousie, or a late-night pickup in Nuwara Eliya and the climb straight from the car.

Journey details
From Nuwara Eliya the road drops to Nanu Oya, then follows the A7 west through Talawakele, past the roadside viewpoints over St Clair’s and Devon falls, to Hatton, the main town of this tea district. From Hatton a narrower road climbs towards Maskeliya along the Maskeliya reservoir and continues to Nallathanniya, where the path begins. About 70 km and about two hours fifteen minutes. In daylight the waterfalls, the tea estates around Talawakele and a tea factory are natural stops, and the first sight of the peak above the reservoir is one of the best views on the route. At night the drive is direct.
The road
The A7 from Nanu Oya to Hatton is winding, with buses and tea lorries during the day and almost nothing on it at night. The road from Hatton to Maskeliya and Nallathanniya is narrower, with tight bends and some steep pitches beside the reservoir. Mist is common on both sections after dark, sometimes thick enough to cut visibility to a few metres, and the driver will take it slowly. In the season, and above all on weekends and Poya (full-moon) days, traffic builds near Dalhousie from late evening, buses unload pilgrims at the trailhead and parking is tight. The drop-off is at the start of the path, where tea stalls, guesthouses and shops selling warm clothes line the first stretch.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For two people, the economy sedan is enough on a drive of just over two hours, and the comfort sedan gives a group of four more room to doze on the way. Families or groups of up to six take the 6-seat van, and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Whatever the vehicle, bring warm clothing in the cabin: the summit at dawn is cold and windy, and you will want a fleece, a hat and gloves, plus a light rain layer. The climb itself is long, several thousand steps and usually three to four hours up for a fit walker, so travel light and leave anything heavy at your hotel.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
By public transport, take the train from Nanu Oya to Hatton on the hill-country line, then a bus from Hatton to Nallathanniya, which runs frequently in the pilgrimage season. It works well for an afternoon arrival and a night in Dalhousie, but there are no trains and few buses late at night, so a night start from Nuwara Eliya needs a car. A tuk-tuk from Hatton is possible, though cold and slow on the climb to Maskeliya. If you want to return to Nuwara Eliya after the descent, book the return transfer for the morning at the same time; booking both legs takes 10% off the return.
Best time to travel this route
The season runs from the December full moon to Vesak in May; the path is lit and the tea stalls are open all night. Most climbers start between 01:00 and 03:00 to reach the summit for sunrise, around 06:00, and the triangular shadow of the peak on the clouds below. Leaving Nuwara Eliya around 23:00 or midnight gets you to the trailhead in time, but a pickup between 22:00 and 05:00 carries the 15% night surcharge. The alternative is to leave in the afternoon, sleep a few hours in Dalhousie and walk out of your guesthouse at night, with no surcharge. Outside the season, from June to November, the path is unlit, wet and often in cloud. Weekends and Poya days are very crowded.
