The A5 drops through Ramboda, Pussellawa and Gampola to the A1 near Peradeniya, then the E04 Central Expressway and the E03 run to the terminal. One hundred and seventy-five kilometres, four and a half hours in the dry, five and a half in the wet. For a 01:30 flight that puts the pickup around 17:30 in good conditions, and we would plan 16:30 between October and December. For a morning flight, leaving the evening before and sleeping near the airport is a serious option rather than an extravagance.

The first forty kilometres are a continuous descent through tea country on a road with almost nowhere to overtake, shared with lorries carrying tea down the hill. Downhill is easier on passengers than the climb and harder on brakes, and drivers who know the A5 use engine braking and take it steadily rather than ride them. Two conditions genuinely change the timing. Cloud settles on the escarpment from mid-afternoon and can cut visibility to a few dozen metres in minutes. And in the north-east monsoon, roughly October to December, small landslips on the Ramboda section are common enough that an hour of margin is planning rather than pessimism. Neither is dangerous at a sensible pace; both cost time.

As on the way up, we would steer you past the economy sedan here, and for the same reason: an hour and a half of continuous bends is a different experience with softer suspension. The comfort sedan is the sensible minimum for two, the comfort van the right answer for four or more. The departure-specific point is temperature. You will leave Nuwara Eliya at ten degrees and reach the airport at twenty-eight, so keep the layer you need for the morning somewhere you can shed it, not packed at the bottom of a case in the boot.

The train from Nanu Oya down to Kandy or Colombo is one of the great railway journeys anywhere, and for any day but this one we would tell you to take it. Against a flight it is the wrong tool: six to seven hours to Colombo Fort, sold out weeks ahead in season, followed by thirty-five kilometres still to arrange with your luggage at whatever hour you arrive. Do the hill-country line earlier in your trip, unencumbered and in daylight, and let the car handle the day that has a deadline on it.

Leave in the morning if the flight allows. The descent is faster and clearer before the afternoon cloud, and the hill roads are unlit and genuinely unpleasant in mist after dark. February to April is the driest window; October to December is the wettest and the one where the extra hour earns its place. April fills the town with Sri Lankan holidaymakers and the A5 with their cars, which adds time in both directions. Ramboda Falls and a working tea factory both sit on the route, and with a night flight there is comfortably time for one of them on the way down.
