Out of the bay and six kilometres to the Pinnaduwa interchange at Galle, then the E01 and E03 north to the terminal. One hundred and forty-five kilometres, two hours thirty-five, tolls inside the price. For a 01:30 flight the pickup falls around 19:25; for a 09:00 departure, around 02:55. The expressway does not queue, so unlike most departure runs in Sri Lanka this one barely moves with the hour.

The bay road is one-way along part of its length and closed to vehicles along the beach frontage, so your driver approaches from the inland side and, for a number of properties, cannot reach the door at all. Fifty to a hundred metres on foot with luggage is normal here and it is worth knowing the evening before rather than at pickup. Tell us the property name and we will agree the shortest walk. The other thing this route offers, and the reason several people book a later flight deliberately, is Galle Fort: the interchange is five minutes from the ramparts, so a couple of hours inside the walls fits neatly between check-out and a night departure.

The drive itself is smooth and flat and asks nothing of a vehicle, so choose on luggage and on the last fifty metres. This is one of the rare routes where the comfort sedan can be the better choice for four people rather than the compromise, because it reaches properties in the bay that a loaded van cannot, and a shorter walk with cases beats a wider seat for two and a half hours. Galle station is twenty minutes away by tuk-tuk and the coastal train to Colombo Fort is a fine journey, but it ends thirty-five kilometres from the terminal and needs a second booking at the far end. Expressway buses from Galle are fast and cheap with the same gap. Neither is a sensible way to reach a flight. Where the train is genuinely better is earlier in your trip, moving along this coast, and we would rather you used it then than for the one journey where being late has a cost.

Any hour works, which is unusual and worth using. Night departures are marginally quicker and carry a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. December to April is the dry season and the busiest; between May and September the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain that can slow the expressway briefly, and twenty minutes of margin covers it. The genuine planning question here is not traffic but the afternoon: hotels check out at 10:00 or 11:00 and most long-haul flights leave after midnight, so the car can collect you at check-out, wait while you spend the afternoon in Galle Fort, and still reach the terminal with the whole buffer intact.
