Thirty kilometres, about forty minutes, and one of the prettiest short drives in the country: the A2 hugs the coast almost the whole way from Unawatuna to Mirissa. It is the classic move from one beach to the next, usually on the day you check out of one and into the other. A tuk-tuk can do it, and for a light traveller that is fine. For two people with suitcases, a family, or anyone with a surfboard, a car that collects you at the door and puts you down at the next one is the easier forty minutes.

Journey details

The route leaves Unawatuna eastwards on the A2 and follows the shore through Thalpe and Koggala, where the road runs between the airstrip and the sea, then on through Ahangama, Midigama and Weligama before crossing the Pelena headland into Mirissa. Thirty kilometres, about forty minutes. There is no expressway on this stretch and none would save time. The price shown before booking is fixed for the vehicle, with fuel, parking and the driver included, and it does not change if traffic in Weligama is slow. If you are moving on the day of an 11:00 check-out, a pickup at that time puts you in Mirissa well before most afternoon check-ins, with room for a stop along the way.

The road

The start is the tricky bit. Unawatuna bay has a partly one-way road and a beach frontage closed to cars, so for many properties the driver waits on the inland side and there are fifty metres or so to walk with bags. Tell us the property name and we will agree the shortest walk. After that the A2 is a flat, busy two-lane road with buses stopping often and tuk-tuks pulling out without warning; the slowest points are the town centres, Weligama above all. Past Koggala the stilt fishermen work from poles just off the beach, and the driver can pull over for a few minutes if you ask. At the Mirissa end, give the exact hotel name: the lanes to the beach are narrow and some are sand.

Recommended vehicle for this route

On a forty-minute coastal road the ride matters little, so choose on luggage and access. Two people with two cases fit the economy sedan, which is also the best vehicle for the narrow lanes at both ends. Four people with a case each need the comfort sedan; five to six take the 6-seat van, and seven or eight the 8-seat van. Surfboards ride inside a van with a row folded, so tell us about them when you book. If your Unawatuna accommodation is in the bay itself, a sedan will often stop closer to your door than a loaded van can.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

A tuk-tuk from Unawatuna to Mirissa is perfectly doable and cheaper, though forty minutes of A2 traffic in an open three-wheeler with bags on your knees is less charming than it sounds. PickMe works here too and is a good option for one or two people travelling light. Buses run constantly along the coast and cost almost nothing, but you will stand with your luggage. The coastal railway follows the same shore, yet Mirissa has no convenient station, so the train means a tuk-tuk at each end. The booked car wins when you have luggage, children or boards, or when you simply want the checkout and check-in to connect.

Best time to travel this route

The dry season on this coast runs roughly from December to April, and it is also whale-watching season in Mirissa, roughly November to April, with boats leaving the harbour early in the morning. If you want to be on a boat the day after you arrive, travel the afternoon before rather than at dawn. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings sudden, heavy showers; the drive still takes about forty minutes but a car beats a tuk-tuk by a wide margin in the rain. Mid-morning, after the school run and before the midday heat, is the calmest time on the A2. Between 15 December and 15 January high-season pricing applies.

How far is Unawatuna from Mirissa?

About thirty kilometres along the A2 coast road, around forty minutes by car. The route passes Koggala, Ahangama and Weligama.

Is it worth taking a taxi rather than a tuk-tuk?

For one person with a small bag, a tuk-tuk is fine. With suitcases, children, surfboards or rain, a booked car is more comfortable and connects checkout to check-in.

Can we stop to see the stilt fishermen on the way?

Yes, they are right beside the road near Koggala. Ask the driver on the day, or arrange a longer stop on WhatsApp when you book.

Can you pick us up in Unawatuna bay?

Yes, though part of the bay is closed to cars, so for some properties the driver waits on the inland side. Give us the property name and we will agree the meeting point.

Can I book an early pickup?

Yes. Pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a night surcharge, shown itemised before you pay. We include fifteen minutes of free waiting at every pickup.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Yes, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the pickup time.
