A private taxi from Ahangama to Mirissa costs $35 (LKR 11,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $39 (LKR 12,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $46 (LKR 14,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $55 (LKR 17,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 15 km journey, about 20 min of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026.

Fifteen kilometres and about twenty minutes along the coast, which makes this one of the shortest transfers we run and one where we will be straight with you: for one person with a day bag, a tuk-tuk or a PickMe ride does the job. A booked car earns its place in three situations. You are moving your whole stay from Ahangama to Mirissa with a family and suitcases; you need to be at Mirissa harbour before dawn for a whale-watching boat; or it is raining, which on this coast means properly raining.

Journey details

The route is the A2 east the whole way: out of Ahangama past Midigama, round the long curve of Weligama bay, through Weligama town, then over the headland at Pelena and down into Mirissa. Fifteen kilometres, about twenty minutes when the road is clear. There is no expressway involved and no toll, and the price shown before you book covers the car, fuel, parking and the driver. The drop-off depends on where you are going in Mirissa: the harbour sits at the eastern end of the bay, the beach hotels and Parrot Rock towards the west, and they are not the same address.

The road

The only part of this road that costs time is Weligama. The A2 narrows through the town centre, buses stop on the carriageway at the stand, and on weekday mornings and at school closing the few hundred metres through town can take longer than the rest of the trip. Along the bay itself the road runs right beside the beach, with surf schools and board racks spilling onto the verge, so drivers take it slowly. At the Mirissa end the beach accommodation is reached by narrow lanes running south off the A2, some of them sand, and a few guesthouses have no vehicle access for the last stretch. Give us the property name rather than "Mirissa beach" and your driver will know which lane to take and where to stop.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For two people with backpacks the economy sedan is plenty, and in the sand lanes behind Mirissa beach it gets closer to the door than anything larger. A family changing villas with four cases wants the comfort sedan, and five or more people, or a long surfboard, need the 6-seat van with a row folded. If you are bringing boards, tell us the number and length when you book so the right vehicle is sent; boards do not go on the roof of a sedan and they do not go across the laps of passengers. On a twenty-minute drive the ride quality hardly matters, so choose on luggage and nothing else.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

Tuk-tuks wait all along the A2 in Ahangama, and PickMe works on this stretch of coast. For a solo traveller heading to Mirissa for the evening, either is the sensible choice and we would say so. Buses run along the A2 constantly and are very cheap, but with luggage they are hard work. The coastal train runs through Ahangama and Weligama, though Mirissa has no convenient station of its own, so it means a tuk-tuk at the far end anyway. Where the booked car wins is timing and certainty: a whale boat that leaves at half past six does not wait for a tuk-tuk that failed to turn up at 05:45, and a villa check-out at 11:00 followed by a 14:00 check-in is easier with a driver who waits while you load.

Best time to travel this route

Whale watching from Mirissa harbour runs roughly from November to April, which is also the dry season on this coast, and the boats ask you to be at the harbour early. From Ahangama a pickup around 05:45 is usually right; anything booked before 05:00 falls in the night window and carries a surcharge that is shown, itemised, before you pay. Between May and September the south-west monsoon brings heavy showers and the whale boats stop, but the drive is still twenty minutes. Avoid Weligama at school closing time if you can. From 15 December to 15 January high-season pricing applies, and booking more than fourteen days ahead takes a little off the fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Ahangama to Mirissa?

A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How far is Ahangama from Mirissa?

About fifteen kilometres on the A2 coast road, which takes around twenty minutes. Weligama town is the only place where traffic regularly slows you down.

Should I take a tuk-tuk or a taxi from Ahangama to Mirissa?

For one person with a small bag, a tuk-tuk or PickMe is fine. A booked car makes sense with luggage, children, surfboards, a pre-dawn boat or heavy rain.

Can you get us to the whale-watching boat in Mirissa?

Yes. Tell us the boat operator and meeting time when you book and we will set the pickup accordingly. The season runs roughly November to April.

Can you carry our surfboards?

Yes, inside the vehicle. Tell us how many boards and how long they are when you book, so we send a van with a row folded rather than a sedan.

Is the price fixed?

Yes, per vehicle, shown before you book, with fuel, parking and the driver included. It does not change with traffic or the number of passengers in the car.

How do I pay?

The full price by card online when you book, then we confirm on WhatsApp; there is nothing to pay the driver in Mirissa. If you prefer, you can pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver; that option costs 10% more.
