The A2 east or west to the Imaduwa or Kokmaduwa interchange depending on where you stayed, then the E01 and E03 north to the terminal. One hundred and sixty kilometres, two hours fifty, tolls inside the price. For a 01:30 flight the pickup falls around 19:10; for a 10:00 departure, around 03:40. The expressway portion never queues, so the figure holds whatever the hour.

Give us the property name, not the village. The stretch called Ahangama runs from Kathaluwa through Midigama to the town itself, six or seven kilometres, and the ends are a quarter of an hour apart by road. Most villas sit inland up unsigned lanes between paddy and palm, several on sand or broken concrete, and at four in the morning none of them is lit. Two things solve it: the exact property, and a waiting spot agreed with your host the evening before. In the wet months those inland lanes soften and a loaded van will take the longer tarmac approach rather than risk them, which adds a few minutes we already build in.

Boards, as on the way in. Over seven feet needs the comfort van with a row folded flat, and the sensible move is to book the same vehicle you arrived in so the question never arises at the door. Beyond boards, this is a smooth road and the economy sedan handles two people and their luggage without complaint, with the genuine advantage that it reaches more of the inland lanes than a van does. For four with cases the comfort sedan takes a case each; for five or six, take the van and expect the tarmac approach rather than the shortest one.

Ahangama has a station on the coastal line and the ride to Galle or Matara is one of the small pleasures of this coast. As a way to reach a flight it fails in the usual manner: it runs the wrong way for the airport, and going north means Colombo Fort and a second booking with your luggage. There is no bus worth the name from here for a departure. This is a route where the private car is not the comfortable option but the only one that has a single moving part, and that matters more on the last day than on any other.

The drive is the same all year and at all hours; night departures are quicker and carry a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. What changes is the pickup. From November to April the coast is busy, the lanes are dry and everything is straightforward. From May to September the south-west monsoon softens the inland tracks and afternoon rain can make the final approach slower, so we plan the longer route rather than gamble. If your flight leaves after midnight, the car can collect you at check-out, stop at Koggala or Galle Fort, and still reach the terminal with the full buffer.
