Most people making this move are going surfing. Mirissa is where the south coast trip often starts, with the beach and the whale boats, and Ahangama is where a lot of visitors then settle for a week or two: surf camps, villas in the paddy fields behind the coast, and the breaks at Midigama and Kabalana within a short ride. The drive is fifteen kilometres, about twenty minutes. The part worth thinking about is not the road but what goes in the car and where exactly it has to stop.

Journey details

The route runs west on the A2: up over the Pelena headland out of Mirissa, through Weligama town, along the bay and past Midigama into Ahangama. Fifteen kilometres, around twenty minutes, no expressway and no toll. Ahangama stretches along the main road for several kilometres, and many of its villas and surf camps are not on the A2 at all but up lanes running inland into the hills and the paddy fields. The fixed price shown before booking covers the car, fuel, parking and the driver, whichever of those addresses you are going to.

The road

Leaving Mirissa, the lanes behind the beach are narrow and partly sand, so we collect from the property if the car can reach it and from the nearest tarmac if it cannot. Weligama town is the slow point, especially on weekday mornings. The real specificity of this route is at the Ahangama end. Villas inland are reached by concrete or earth lanes that are often a single car wide, with a ditch or a paddy field on one side and nowhere to turn at the end. Some are fine for a van, some are fine for a sedan only, and a few need the last hundred metres on foot. Send us the exact villa name and, if you have it, the pin your host shared, and we will tell you before the day which vehicle will actually reach the gate.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Surfboards decide this transfer more often than headcount. Boards travel in the 6-seat van with a row folded, and anything over seven feet only fits there, and a group of friends arriving for a surf week with boards and bags should take the 8-seat van rather than two cars. We carry boards inside the vehicle rather than strapped to a roof, which is kinder to the boards and to the lanes. Tell us the number and length of boards when you book so the right vehicle is sent. Without boards, two people are well served by the economy sedan, which also copes best with the narrowest villa lanes.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

For one person with a backpack, a tuk-tuk or PickMe from Mirissa to Ahangama is quick and cheap, and we would not pretend otherwise. Buses along the A2 are frequent. The limits show up with boards, which many tuk-tuk drivers will not take or will balance across the roof frame, and with villas up inland lanes, where a tuk-tuk may know the way no better than a car. The coastal train stops at Ahangama but not usefully at Mirissa. If you are moving your whole stay, the booked car means one pickup, everything loaded once, and a driver who waits fifteen minutes free while you settle the bill.

Best time to travel this route

The south coast surf season runs roughly from November to April, when the swell is cleaner and the weather dry, and that is when most surf camps in Ahangama are full and check-in days bunch up. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings onshore wind and rain; the road stays open and short, but a van that does not have to park at the end of a flooded lane is worth a lot more on a wet afternoon. Time the move around check-out and check-in: a late-morning pickup usually lands you as rooms are ready. High-season pricing applies from 15 December to 15 January, and booking more than fourteen days ahead is slightly cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Mirissa to Ahangama?

A private taxi from Mirissa to Ahangama costs $35 (LKR 11,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $39 (LKR 12,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $46 (LKR 14,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $55 (LKR 17,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 15 km journey, about 20 min of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long is the drive from Mirissa to Ahangama?

About twenty minutes for fifteen kilometres along the A2, through Weligama and past Midigama. Allow a little longer on weekday mornings.

Can you take our surfboards to Ahangama?

Yes, inside the vehicle. Tell us how many boards and their length when you book; two boards or anything over seven feet means a van.

Our villa is up a small lane inland. Will the car reach it?

Usually, but not always. Send the villa name or your host’s map pin and we will confirm beforehand which vehicle can reach the gate.

Is a tuk-tuk cheaper from Mirissa to Ahangama?

Yes, and for one person with a backpack it is a good choice. With boards, several bags or a group, a booked van is simpler.

Can we stop in Weligama on the way?

Yes. Weligama is on the route; tell us on WhatsApp after booking and we will arrange the stop, for example to pick up rental boards.

How do I pay for the transfer?

You pay the full price by card online and we confirm on WhatsApp, so the driver collects nothing in Ahangama. Paying 50% online and the rest to the driver in cash is also possible, but it costs 10% more.
