Bandarawela sits at about 1,200 metres in the Uva hills, on the main road and railway between Haputale and Ella. It is a proper working town rather than a traveller village: a crowded market, a bus stand that serves half the province, banks, pharmacies and schools, all spread over a cluster of low hills planted with tea and vegetables. The climate is the other draw. Days are warm without being hot, nights are cool, and the town lies on the drier side of the hills, so it is a pleasant place to stay for a few days. Many visitors use it as a quiet base for Ella, half an hour away, and come back in the evening to a calmer street and a lower hotel bill. Our cab service runs every move out of Bandarawela at a fixed price for the whole vehicle: an economy or comfort sedan, a six-seat or an eight-seat van, driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to hand the driver; or pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Bandarawela to Ella is 15 km, about 30 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000); to Colombo Airport it is 165 km, about 3 h 40, from $95 (Rs 29,000).

Bandarawela

Dowa Rock Temple (Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya)

≈ 15 min by carAllow 1 h

Dowa is a small cave temple a few kilometres from Bandarawela on the Badulla road, reached down a short path beside a stream. A tall standing Buddha is carved into the rock face and left unfinished, and the shrine inside holds old murals; tradition links the site to King Valagamba. It is quiet and takes under an hour, so ask your driver to stop on the way to Ella rather than making a separate trip. Cover shoulders and knees, and leave shoes at the entrance.

Bandarawela

Bandarawela town market

Allow 1 h

Bandarawela is a working Uva town rather than a traveller village, and its market shows it: leeks, carrots, cabbages and fruit come in from the terraced farms around Welimada, alongside spices and dried fish. Go in the morning, when the stalls are full and the town is at its busiest. If you are staying on a hillside outside Bandarawela, the driver can drop you near the market and wait while you shop, which beats carrying bags on a crowded bus.

Ella Rock hike

30 min by car · 15 kmAllow 5 h

Ella Rock is the big ridge facing Little Adam’s Peak across the Ella gap, a half-day hike through eucalyptus and tea with a steep final climb to a wide view over the valley. From Bandarawela the drive to Ella takes about half an hour, so you can start walking early while the air is still cool. The driver drops you in Ella and collects you when you are down. Driver’s tip: hire a local guide or ask often, as the paths split and are poorly marked.

Haputale and Lipton’s Seat sunrise

30 min by car · 15 kmAllow 3 h

Haputale sits on the ridge west of Bandarawela, past the old garrison town of Diyatalawa, and beyond it an estate road climbs to Lipton’s Seat, the lookout over the southern plains named after the tea merchant. For the sunrise you leave Bandarawela in the dark, exactly when a booked car beats hunting for a tuk-tuk. On the way back, stop at the Dambatenne tea factory or the Adisham monastery. Bring a fleece: the top is cold until the sun clears the hills.

Horton Plains National Park

1 h 20 by car · 40 kmAllow 4 h

Horton Plains is the high, windswept plateau west of Bandarawela, where a loop walk crosses grassland and cloud forest to the cliff of World’s End and back past Baker’s Falls. Morning cloud shuts the view early, so from Bandarawela the pickup is in the small hours, with the long climb past Haputale and Ohiya done in the dark. The car waits at the park car park during the walk. Driver’s tip: wear proper shoes, the path is boggy in places and stepped at the falls.

Bandarawela

Ravana Falls (Ravana Ella)

≈ 50 min by carAllow 45 min

Ravana Falls tumbles beside the road from Ella down to Wellawaya, a few kilometres below Ella town. The legend of King Ravana from the Ramayana is attached to it, and to a cave in the hills above. From Bandarawela it makes a short outing combined with Ella, or a quick roadside stop when you head south to Yala or the coast with your luggage. The flow is fullest after the north-east monsoon rains; in a long dry spell it thins right out.

Best time : After the rains, Nov to Feb

Nuwara Eliya via Welimada

1 h 40 by car · 50 kmAllow 4 h

The road from Bandarawela to Nuwara Eliya runs through Welimada, past hillsides of terraced vegetable plots, then climbs into tea before reaching the old colonial hill station. Spend the day at Gregory Lake, see the red-brick post office, and visit a tea estate near Nuwara Eliya to watch the plucking and the factory at work. Your driver brings you back to Bandarawela in the afternoon, before the evening mist settles on the high road over the pass.

Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Bandarawela?

Bandarawela has a station on the main hill-country line, between Haputale and Ella, so the train is a real option. It is slow, cheap and beautiful; reserved seats sell out weeks ahead in season and unreserved carriages fill up. A popular plan is to ride the train and send the luggage by road: book the transfer, tell us the train, and the driver meets you at the arrival station with your bags. Bandarawela is also a bus hub, with frequent buses to Ella, Badulla, Haputale and Welimada, and long-distance buses to Colombo; they are fine with a daypack and hard with suitcases. Tuk-tuks wait near the station and the bus stand, handy for the Dowa temple or dinner in town, as long as you agree the fare first. PickMe and Uber are practically absent here. For the airport, the south coast, the national parks or any trip with luggage, a booked cab with a fixed price is the simple choice.

Where we pick up in Bandarawela

We collect from any hotel, bungalow or guesthouse in and around Bandarawela. Some of the nicest places to stay are old planters’ bungalows and small guesthouses on the hills above the town, reached by steep, narrow lanes; give us the property name and we send a car that can manage the climb. Pickups in Diyatalawa or along the road towards Ella are fine too, just tell us where. The market area is hard to stop in, so for a pickup in the centre we suggest your hotel or the railway station. If you arrive by train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya and want to continue by road, give us the train and the driver waits for the real arrival, not the timetable. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, and the driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp before the day.

Getting to and from Bandarawela

The centre is a knot of roads around the market and the bus stand, with the railway station right beside it, and it jams at school times and on busy market mornings. From there, roads leave in every direction. West, the road follows the ridge through Diyatalawa, a garrison town since colonial days, to Haputale, 15 km and about 30 min; beyond Haputale it climbs through Ohiya to Horton Plains, 40 km and about 1 h 20 to the park. North-west, the road through Welimada and its terraced vegetable farms reaches Nuwara Eliya, 50 km, about 1 h 40, and Hatton, for Adam’s Peak, is 85 km, about 2 h 40. East, the Badulla road passes the Dowa temple before the turn for Ella, 15 km in all. South, the roads drop off the hills to Wellawaya and the lowlands: Udawalawe is 55 km, about 1 h 20, Tissamaharama for Yala 90 km, about 2 h 05, Kataragama 80 km, and Mattala airport 80 km, about 1 h 50. Arugam Bay, on the east coast, is 120 km, about 2 h 40. Colombo Airport is the long one: 165 km, about 3 h 40 through Haputale, Balangoda and Ratnapura.

Travel tips for Bandarawela

Bandarawela is pleasant all year, but the Uva side of the hills is usually driest from about May to September, when the south-west monsoon is soaking the western slopes; October to January, under the north-east monsoon, brings more rain here. Mornings tend to be clear, with cloud building in the afternoon, so plan viewpoints early. Nights are cool: pack a fleece. For Horton Plains, leave before dawn to reach the gate early; pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, shown before you pay. The road to Ella is busy at weekends and in the high season, so allow a little extra time if you have a train or a hike to catch. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and child seats are free on request. If you want a full day of sights around Ella and Haputale with the same car, our car hire with driver, on the private driver page, usually works out better than separate transfers.

About Bandarawela

The Dowa Rock Temple lies a few kilometres out of town on the road towards Ella and Badulla, down a short path beside a stream. Its best-known feature is a tall standing Buddha carved into the rock face and left unfinished; inside the cave shrine are old paintings, and tradition links the site to King Valagamba, who is said to have hidden here. It is small and quiet, and a natural stop on the way to Ella. In town, the market is worth a walk in the morning for the vegetables and fruit that come in from the surrounding farms.

Bandarawela’s real asset is what lies within an hour. Ella, with Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock and the Nine Arch Bridge, is half an hour away. Haputale, with Lipton’s Seat and the Dambatenne tea factory, is just as close in the other direction. The train between Bandarawela and Ella runs through tea country and valleys and is a short, easy way to try the famous line. Horton Plains and World’s End are within reach for a dawn start.
