Haputale taxi & cab service at fixed prices
Taxi from Haputale from $35 (Rs 11,000) per vehicle, not per person
Haputale is a small hill-country town strung along a ridge at about 1,400 metres, at the very southern edge of the highlands. On one side are the tea estates; on the other the land drops away almost vertically, and on a clear morning you look straight down over the southern plains. Travellers come for the sunrise at Lipton’s Seat, the Dambatenne tea factory, the Adisham bungalow and the train, then move on to Ella, Horton Plains or the south. Our taxi service covers those moves with a fixed price for the whole vehicle: an economy or comfort sedan, a six-seat or an eight-seat van, driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. You book and pay the full price online by card, so there is nothing to pay the driver on the day; if you prefer, pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Haputale to Ella is 25 km, about 50 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000); Haputale to Colombo Airport is 210 km, about 5 h 05, from $125 (Rs 40,000).

Things to do by taxi around Haputale
Half-day and day trips from Haputale that travellers book again and again, with the drive time and the fixed price per car. Swipe through, pick one, and book the ride.
Prices are per vehicle and fixed before you book. For several stops in one day with the car waiting for you, a driver for the day is usually simpler.
Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Haputale?
Haputale has something most hill towns lack: a railway station on the main line, between Nanu Oya and Ella. The train is slow, cheap and one of the most beautiful rides in the country, and for Ella or Nuwara Eliya (via Nanu Oya) it is worth taking at least once. Reserved seats sell out weeks ahead in season and unreserved carriages fill up, so a common plan is to ride the train and send the suitcases by road: book the transfer, tell us the train, and the driver meets you at the other end with your bags. The train does not go to Udawalawe, Yala or the south coast, and it only reaches Colombo after a very long day.
Buses run along the ridge to Bandarawela, where you change for Ella, and down the hill towards Wellawaya and the south. They are fine with a daypack, hard with luggage. For Lipton’s Seat, Dambatenne or Adisham, take a tuk-tuk from the town: drivers wait near the station and the bus stand, and you agree the fare before you get in. PickMe and Uber are practically absent here, so there is no app cab to call. For any journey out of Haputale with bags, a booked cab with a price agreed in advance is the simple option.

Where we pick up in Haputale
We collect from any hotel or guesthouse in Haputale, whether it sits on the main street, below the station or out along the ridge road. Several of the best-known guesthouses are down steep lanes or on estate roads with no signs, so give us the property name and we send a car that can reach it. Haputale station is a common pickup: travellers arrive by train from Nuwara Eliya or Kandy and continue by road to the south. Give us the train when you book and the driver waits for the real arrival, not the timetable. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, and the driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp before the day. If you are staying out towards Bandarawela, send us the name first so we can confirm which price applies.
Getting to and from Haputale
The town is one main street on the ridge, with the station just below it and the roads to the estates leaving from either end. Ella is 25 km east through Bandarawela, about 50 min. West, the road climbs past Ohiya towards Horton Plains, 35 km and about 1 h 10 to the park entrance, and on to Nuwara Eliya, 45 km and about 1 h 30. Hatton, for Adam’s Peak country, is 80 km, about 2 h 30. South, the road drops off the edge of the hills to Beragala on the A4, then down to Wellawaya and the lowlands: Udawalawe is 80 km and 2 h 05, Tissamaharama for Yala 105 km, Kataragama 100 km. Mattala airport is 100 km, about 2 h 30. Arugam Bay is the long ride east, 170 km and 5 h 10. Colombo Airport is 210 km, about 5 h 05 through Balangoda and Ratnapura.
Travel tips for Haputale
Mornings are the best part of the day in Haputale in every season: clear air, long views, then cloud building from late morning. The Uva side of the hills is usually at its driest from about May to September, when the south-west monsoon is soaking the other slope, while October to January brings more rain. Bring a fleece: nights are cool at this height. For Horton Plains, leave before dawn to reach the gate early; pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, shown before you pay. The road down to Beragala is steep with tight bends, so travel by daylight towards Udawalawe or Yala and give yourself time to stop at Diyaluma. Between 15 December and 15 January a high-season supplement of 10% applies, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off. For a full day of sights around Haputale with the same car, our car hire with driver, on the private driver page, usually works out better than separate transfers.
About Haputale
Lipton’s Seat is the viewpoint above the Dambatenne estate where Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea merchant, is said to have sat to look over his land. The road up winds through tea, and at sunrise the view opens over the Uva hills and the southern plains, reaching towards the coast on the clearest mornings. Go early: the mist often climbs the slope by mid-morning and the view is gone. Tuk-tuks take you up in the dark; many visitors walk back down through the estate as the tea pluckers start work. On the way you pass the Dambatenne tea factory, built by Lipton at the end of the nineteenth century, where you can see how the leaf becomes tea.
Adisham is a stone country house built in the 1930s in the style of an English manor, now a Benedictine monastery with gardens; it opens to visitors only on certain days, so check before you go. Below the town, the A4 passes Diyaluma Falls, one of the highest waterfalls on the island, near Koslanda. Horton Plains and World’s End are within reach for a dawn start, and the train ride from Haputale towards Ella, past Idalgashinna, is a sight in itself.
